i'd get like 20 snails of different types. some nassarius snails, nerite, cerith. that's what i would do. you could get some hermits if you wanted too if you don't want that many snails. hermits are a big pita in some people's opinion. i have like 10 hermits in my 55g and they don't bother anything. i used to have 30 or 40 and they were a pain.

wow 20 snails hahah thats a lot lol.... hahahah what are the smallest ones and would they be good in a 10 gallon reef?

just replace the CC with an aragonite type sand, helps keep the ph stable.

For a 10g tank, I would only get 6-10 snails, any more than that and some will eventually starve. I prefer dwarf cerith snails, I think they serve 2 functions: eating diatoms and algae, and stirring the sandbed. If you decide to get hermits, I would limit it to 1 or 2. Make sure you wait until your diatom bloom to add your CUC. Nassarius snails are carnivours and don't eat algae, but if you are feeding meaty preparations, they do a great job of cleaning up the left overs. I would limit it to 1 nassarius if you get one, and wait until you are feeding.

If you decide to get hermit crabs, I'd recommend the Red/Yellow faced ones(Paguristes Cadenati). In my tanks they are world better at doing their "jobs" than the blue legged ones. Still, a single snail can do 10x more than crabs, so their purposes are really limited to ornamental, or eating the occasional dead fish before you can find it...

I concur, I brought home 2 of each(blue legs, and red legs) the red ones seem to do alot more work than the blue ones, Ive also noticed the red ones will cliffhang on the top of the rocks whereas the blue ones stay closer to the sand bed..I also have ceriths and nass..and an astrea in my AP12... furthermore the blue leg hermies are just plain lazy buggers...I did observe a red one molesting a snail, but that changed once I put empty shells in the tank.... eek3.gif IMO go with a few red hermits

IMO, crabs suck, including hermits.

I 4 Nassarius in my 10G and they do a great job of keeping the sand bed stirred and leftovers picked up.

Nassarius are great if you've got a sand bed but not with crushed coral.

Except the OP clearly states the have crushed coral for now. Nassarius snails and crushed coral are not a good match.

Good catch.. sorry for the mismatch. Nassarius + sand = Good, Nassarius + crushed coral = Not good
