Full Version: Pegging!

Hi!

I was just watching some videos at www.reefvideos.com and I saw a guy that drilled his frags and corals and fitted hard airline tubing in the drilled hole. Then he could just place the corals/frags wherever he wanted in the tank because he had drilled a bunch of holes in his live rock when he was doing his aquascaping. Just check for the video MOUNTING "PEGGING" wink.gif

Doesn`t the drilling hurt the live rock`s filtrating ability?

My tank is just set up, and I haven`t introduced any corals yet. Should I drill holes in my live rock now, while I still got the chance?

The drilling actually may increase the filtering ability of the rock by making more surface area for the beneficial bacterial to populate.
IMO you should definitely drill your rock now. I am just starting up a 29 biocube and will definitely drill and peg my rock before I aquascape. I have had a 72 bowfront up and running for over 7 years and wish I had known about this technique when I started. It gives you many more options to use as your tank matures.

Sounds similar to how many people stack their LR in gravity defying ways wink.gif. Drill both rocks, insert rod to hold them together.

Why not just glue the plugs to the rock? Isn't it easier?

This method is very helpful when you are having problems with finding the right spot for a coral, so that the coral shows it`s best colors. As Carl, in the video, says: "I can put a frag in one place and it is brown, I put it another place and the color is blue". When you glue a coral to your LR, you don`t have the opportunity to easely move the frag around in the tank, til you find the best spot for it. And also, when you peg your corals, you may easier acchieve a unique coral setup.

I reccommend you watching the video. It will impress you! smile.gif
