Full Version: HOW to remove mushrooms from your system?

So I set my tank up about 11 months ago and in the beginning I put in some "cool" purple mushrooms. Now the regret sinks in. I have moved on to SPS and I am ready to rid my tank of mushrooms. These purple mushrooms grow and spread like crazy. I have some that are 4” across! I have tried simply pulling them from the rock, yea not gonna happen, their tissue is like leather. I would rather not kill them, but at this point I really just want them out.

Does anyone have any suggestion on how to get rid of them?

Does anything eat them?

I know that if you are able to remove one whatever tissue left behind will form more mushrooms.

Help Please!

sell the rock with the shrooms on it....buy a new rock. this would be the easiest way to get rid of them without killing them.

is removing the rock and replacing it with a clean one an option?

a lot better than killing it and you can just do a straight up trade for a similar sized rock.
JohnOTS
I agree trading the rock for a shroomless one would be better. Problem is they have spred to all the rocks.

A dremel with a diamond blade could work. just cut underneath them.

Wait, what?

If you're in a Slingblade mood:

3 parts kalkwasser:1part RO water
Pull up into 3cc syringe with 18 gauge needle
Inject into mouth

***I do not support this whatsoever. This is my method for controlling aptasia and I know it can work for mushrooms as well. TRADE THE ROCK.....the natural reefs will thank you for it

I'll take some.

When shrooms start stinging my other coral I just brush them off the rock with a toothbrush. Usually does the trick.

Brush them off with a toothbrush??? I could not remove them if I where to grab them and pull as hard as I could, this would just rip them into pieces, leaving many little pieces on da rock - resulting in yet more shrooms. I think I will have to just go with the dremel approach next time I feel like taking ALL the rock out of my tank.

When I get around to taking all my rock out of the tank to get them out they are yours! wink.gif

I will PM you when I get to it, it will be closer to christmass.
OkcKoolaid
i just grab my 1 head frag of frogspawn and start stinging all the shrooms with it, rinse wash repeat smile.gif your mileage may vary

Ok, I'll take some, some not all.

you could give them away as xmas presents to your fellow reefers.
