Full Version: Film on water surface in AC110, options besides skimming?

Hi,
Im starting to see a very small film on the surface of the water in my HOB AC110, modded. I was wondering if there was anything I can do for it besides skim. I was thinking I need turbulence back there, but how? Ive read mixed reviews about the AC skimmer, Im not sure about any other mini skimmer options. Im running chemi pure in the inlet area, then filter pad, then cheato/calupera and a few lived rock chunks. Stevie T fuge light as well. Thanks

You can try modding this onto the inlet of the AC or make own DIY skimmer box to go around the inlet.

That sounds like the best idea to me as well. I'm new to this but I know that JBJ had the same problem with the first nano cubes they built. They made a skimmer box that just attached around the inlet by suction and effectively eliminates the slick on top of the water.

I'd say a JBJ skimmer box would work but I don't know how big the inlet is on your tank, so it, may it may not, but only because it wouldn't fit. See if you can find and image of it online...wait, I'll do one better.

That's the skimmer box in the upper left...the little combs just stick up out of the water at the surface and effectively eliminate the slick as water is pulled through.

That little skimmer was a genius idea from JBJ, I have it on my 24NC as well. My problem is not in the display tank, its the water in the filter itself. My DT's surface is pretty turbulent thanks to the MP20. Im actually thinking about a mini powerhead for my 1 gallon refugium...am I crazy? laugh.gif .

i have a modded ac70 and all i do it stuff about a 4" square piece of filter wool or pad around the inlet of the intake tube. I replace it once a week and it takes care of it just fine.

What about a mini bubble pump in the filter? This would cause some turbulence on the surface. Any detrimental effects possible?

I see what you're saying now AudiOs. I just purchased a media rack slide in basket for the back as well. I plan on creating a small refuge w/ Macro Algae w/ an underwater lite...etc. I thought you were referring to the tank itself. I'm new...my bad.

For what it's worth a small air pump down on a low setting would eliminate the slick...I'm not sure what it might do for Algae growth though...1. It would promote it. 2. It would promote all algae growth unless what you have in the refugium would have a chance to suck up the majority of it.

You have any tips on the 24G Nano...I'll have had mine for week this friday.

Would work, salt-creep/spray from bubbles breaking on surface might become an issue though.
Maybe use an Aqualift pump in a sort of closed loop, with the output facing upward sorta like a garden fountain, really low flow, and no popping bubbles, but should disturb the surface enough to break up the slick.

I think I'll go the air pump route. It will be in my refugium ac110 so let the algae grow! The only thing I can recommend for the nanocube would be
Remove the biogalls and sponges. I'm runnng some rubble and filter pad on chamber 1 cheato in 2 and heat and mj900 in 3. Plus 2 k nano s for flow.
