i saw a pic today when i logged on and was wondering it it was safe to remove the rims as in like wouldn't it just burst or are the rimmms just for holding up a hood

This is for sure a "Do it at your own risk" type thing... but for the most part the rims are really more for stability on larger tanks to prevent bowing... I have read of people removing the rim on 2.5g 5.5g and even 10 and 20g tanks with no problems at all. Be warned that it leaves the open edges of the glass for you to easily be cut on... be warned, and do it at your own risk...

Some people have luck, and some break the glass tank itself just trying to remove the rim....

Here are nifty instructions on how to remove the rim. Be careful though and go slowly, I cracked the first tank that I tried.

This is best done with smaller tanks. Remember, the manufacturer wouldn't spend money on a rim if they weren't concerned about structural stability from using only the silicone.

I removed the top rim only on my 15g, makes it look great. Do it at your own risk and be careful, I did scratch my glass with the razor blade.

ps, this is about the largest tank people remove the rim on.

I personally wouldn't remove the trim above a 10 gallon.
