I was wondering if it is a good skimmer for a 5.5 gallon aquarium. Would it get rid of my nitrate problem? Or should I try seachem matrix or a nitrate media?

I'm not sure, but you would be be really pressed to fit it on a 5.5. It's still pretty large

How bout trying cutting back feeding and larger more frequent water changes.
On a nano tank that small you shouldn't need anything other than that
