check out my new frag plug. this is a project in the making. please dont comment on the wood frag plug. any other comment are welcome.

Your post makes no sense.

1: Those are gonna float.
2: If they're pressure treated, they're going to kill everything in the tank.
3: Those are gonna float.
4: Those are gonna leech tannins and other such things into the water.
5: Those are gonna float.
6: Wood glue + Salt Water = Leeching of woodglue.
7: Those are gonna float.
8: Nothing will want to grow on, colonize, or inhabit unfinished wood except worms.
9: Those are gonna float... until they stop floating, at which point the seam will already have separated, but it will have been floating for so long that the frag mounted to it would likely be dead.

it makes complete sense. this is a big project i'm doing and the plug shown are not the actual one going to be use, but will be use to create the mold. the mold will than be use to make the real plug.
i'll try to keep posting as the project goes.

Yupp.

but why would you need to make molds?
Super glue + sand works just fine....

PS; Whoever can find the ceramic plug and photoshop a red circle around it wins something! biggrin.gif

What do I win?

i would rethink the diameter of the plugs. they seem a bit big to go into eggcrates.
RyanR1212
i think what your doing is really cool. one questions what is the mold going to be made out of??? plastic?? then you just shove like some sort of cement in in and then pull it out when its dry??

the one frag plug in the picture have a skinny stem. mine that i will be making have a much better stem, in term offer less movement of the plug with high flow. these will fit perfectly in the egg crate.

i just order the stuff i will be using to make the mold. cant wait for it to arrive so i can start testing.

Seriously, you need another hobby (or a job).

Interesting. What material will you be using for the plugs? From anecdotal reports the ORA plugs (HATE THEM!!!) don't grow algae but corals encrust nicely...

Looking good man.
I knew there had to be something else when viewing the first post, vs wooden frags.

now that the plug are dry and harden up. it's time to remove them. there is few few things i need to try out in term of the mixing of sand. this mix was a 3:1. this is the first patch of plug from this mold. i'm currently just put in a new mix of 4:1. we'll see how this mixed ratio comes out in 3 days.
here is a few picture of how it's came out.

any comment and suggestion are always welcome.

I suggest you cut your finger nails... tongue.gif But seriously, mine are like just a little shorter than yours. Probably helps to remove the plugs from the mold. I was just thinking about how to DIY plugs myself, so seriously again, Good job!

the nail does help with pulling the plug out.
xiongaquatics
well, here is the second plug and how it came out. looking much better. hopefully the third patch will be perfect.
Boomboy
very very cool, if you can make them cheaper than the other plug then you got yourself a very good diy project here. im sure many people would buy from you once they see the final product.

i will be marketing them for cheap. on ebay, people sell them for little more than $.25 a plug. i'm thinking something around $.18 a plug.

here is the third attempt. this time it's perfect.

fiddly_foo
That is really good so when are these bad boys gonna be up for sale.. I like the progress and how it keep getting better .Do the same thing but a little bigger diamater plug those are nice but all the bigger diameter plugs never have the steam for eggcrates all the 1.5" are always flat I think a 1.5" plug with a steam would sell good I would but 25 right away, well keep up the good work
xiongaquatics
the plug size i will be making will be 3/4-1", 1.25", 1.5" and maybe 2" if there is enough request for it.

Looks nice!
jakeh24
wow thats cool looking
do they just pop out of the mold? or do you have to spray it with pam first tongue.gif
xiongaquatics
i have to grab them out. if i f flip them over than some do fall right out.
PIPS
So when are these going to be for sale ?
MitchReef
Are you going to pre-cure them before selling?

So I just want to say that I am the first person to get these great plugs and they only look better in person! They are very uniform in size, precured for 2 weeks, and I think they will work better than any other I have used. I like the marble tiles for zoas, but these I will save for my SPS. I definitely recommend these.
vladaruz
Nice work!
What material did you use for the mold?
Silicone?
