Ok, let me explain a little more about the fish here at GC Reef because we're really excited about this! I know it's long but please read the whole post!

First:
Our breeding program is growing with the release of beautiful and hard to find GCR onyx clowns coming soon. Our other broodstock species were obtained as juveniles and they are growing well and beginning to come into breeding condition. We hope to add several other species of tank breed fish raised right here at GC Reef in the near future.

Second:
We are also realistic hobbyists. We realize that there are many species of reef fish that are not yet feasible (for various reasons beyond the scope of this post) to raise in captivity and therefore must be collected from the wild. The variety of captive raised species available to the hobbyist is increasing but the fact is that almost every person has wild caught species in their tanks.

These fish are taken from natural reefs that (unless you've had the blinders on for the last 15 years) you know suffer from human induced stresses such as overfishing, habitat destruction, pollution, climate change etc. Now, there is conflicting ideas about how much hobbyists contribute to these stresses but the fact of the matter is taking fish from a reef isn’t likely to benefit that ecosystem.

In addition to this, the harsh reality is that many of the species collected from natural reefs don’t even make it to the LFS. Another percentage (varies a lot from store to store) of these fish perish at the LFS and some die in the hobbyist's tank... who here hasn't lost a fish?

The result is HIGH MORTALITY of fish taken from natural reef ecosystems that are already in various levels of stress (survey studies have shown that virtually no reefs remain in 'pristine' condition). This high mortality causes many more fish to be removed from natural reefs for the aquarium trade than need be.

So, what does this have to do with GC Reef??? Glad you asked!

We wanted to deviate from the norm and try to limit the morality of livestock in our hobby while providing some of the best specimens possible. The fish that GC Reef is bringing into our facility come from only the highest quality wholesalers who deal with quality, reputable collectors and hand collected specimens. This way, we start with the healthiest animals possible. Additionally, our fish are acclimated with the extreme care and devotion we exhibit with all our animals (if you've been to the store, you know!). We don't leave animals sitting around in boxes and bags when they arrive. All incoming livestock is acclimated and immediately placed in pristine water conditions and at a salinity that matches the bag from which the fish came in. This practice reduces stress during initial acclimation and means minimum stress when you receive them for your home aquarium.

Additionally, all fish are quarantined and treated with copper sulfate and/or a formaldehyde solution to combat Amyloodinium ocellatum and Cryptocaryon irritans (ich)... the bane of aquarium keepers existence! If required, fish are given therapeutic baths containing praziquantel or other medications to eliminate flukes, and other external parasites occasionally observed on wild fish. Finally, fish will only be posted on our website once treatments are complete and the fish are eating and healthy. No water is shared between quarantine tanks to eliminate the possibility of transmitting harmful parasites.

Why do we do all this WITHOUT passing the cost onto the customer????

Well, two reasons;
1)we care about the state of natural reefs and want to minimize our footprint on them
2)How many of us actually quarantine our fish? Be honest... truth is, not many. At GC Reef we do the hard work for you.

Oh, and we'll be offering these fish at some of the best prices anywhere!!!

We hope you're as excited as we are!
We'll be happy to answer any questions.

Happy Reefing!
