My tank is 1 month old and I have been wanting to put my first coral in. My lighting is 48 watts of PC light and its 16 inches from the light to the sand. I wanted to know if my tank is mature enough to accommodate a GSP on the sand bed. My clown pair will hopefully host this coral. Thank you.
k.tran
slim chances your clowns will host the coral. gsp is almost unkillable so i would add it. GOOD LUCK fingersx01.gif
fishieCJ
So does anyone else say add it. Im worried about killing my first coral.
Nemo Niblets
I added my green star polyps in 4 days after I bought my tank. Not a good idea from my fish store, but you get the point.
fishieCJ
and it survived? lol
thecowkid
I would be hard pressed to believe that you COULD kill gsp. Heck I use to have to burn it off my rocks time from time just to keep it in check. I've glued it to crabs shells to give them a troll lookin afro. But do NOT be alarmed if it closes up from time to time. I mean this stuff can close up for weeks on end. So dont start a "MY GSP IS DEAD" thread tongue.gif It will do fine.
fishieCJ
wow lol i thought coral was hard to keep.
Nemo Niblets
Some are. Think of them of flowers. Some are very delicate, and some are weeds.
thecowkid
We once took a maniquins head and glued it to it. This was in a 200gallon. I think the best was when it had over took a Hydor Flo.
fishieCJ
Do i have to add supplements when I get the GSP. Preferably a Kent prosuct because my LFS has a whole shelf devoted to kent products.
thecowkid
NOPE! Never add anything your not testing for. Period. I think this is what has killed more tanks than anything.

Trust us. YOU CANNOT KILL,HURT,HARM GSP! You may upset it, but it will not die. Keep this in mind. gsp and xenia should be kept on a little rock in your sandbed. B/C one day in the future you will want to toss them to another reefer and step up to different non weed type corals.

DUH you haveta have water in the tank tongue.gif

I stand corrected then. But seriously the only time I've seen it die is due to someone gluein the mat on a rock upside down.
Nemo Niblets
I glued mine to the back wall of my 'cube.
evodrgn@
^^^ you should've taken pics of the GSP on the hermit crabs shells haha that'd be awesome!!!! I might try that myself LOL
Jacobnano
I just put an extra rock I have with GSP and xenia on it into my cycling 10g. The xenia is kinda dying but the GSP is actually open lol.
fishieCJ
lol thanks guys. Now i know why the GSP is the only thing that looks alive in my LFS (PETCO) . I think i'll add it this weekend. What about acclimation and moving it can it be out of water or does it have to be submerged.
fishieCJ
hello?
thecowkid
I've always just ploped mine in the water. Its fine if you remove it from the water. Thats how you glue it to rocks, crabs, heads....tongue.gif
Lawnman
I left a GSP rock in my garage one day in a bucket with no water after I fragged it. My garage got to about 95 that day I came home later that night about 10 hours later and put it back in my tank and it opened back up 2 hours later. So yes it is a hard to keep coral.LOL
Nemo Niblets
I believe it.
fishieCJ
lol wow you guys are mean to your coral tongue.gif but seriously you dont even have to acclimate it
Lawnman
Unless it is SPS or Fish I don't acclimate nothing. I take it out of the bag and water and stick it right in the tank.
RyanR1212
ya dude if you actually kill your gsp in a tank that has been up for 10 hours.... get out of this hobby....

but ya irl some zoas will be out of the water for a good six hours because of tides and such so ya you can leave them out for hours. and mine closes up sometimes but then when it opens again it has new white instead of purple encrusting stuff which means that it just grew.
fishieCJ
well went to the LFS today, and i was sadly dissapointed. the GSP they had was apparenly on sale that day and when the sale was over it went from a 20 dollar GSP to a 45 dollar GSP sad.gif
Lawnman
Send me a PM I will sell you some nice GSP frags for 5 dollars each and 6 dollar shipping.
k.tran
please dont buy from petsmart/co/whatever. I am sure that there are good fish stores in the greater sacramento area. and normally gsp is given away for free, find a group of local reefers near you to help you out.
fishieCJ
thanks for the offer lawn man but my mom is going up to sacramento this weekend and im hoping she can stop by at "O" street aquariums and pick me up a nice frag.
fishieCJ
Ok can someone help me out with corals that a clown will likely host. I would like an anemone but i know my tank is too small so can some one point me in the direction of a nano sized coral that a clown would host.

fishieCJ
lol i want to see some pics of a gsp glued to a crab

Corals are a lot harder to kill than people give them credit for being. I put my first corals in my tank on the day I first put live rock in it (long story, end result was that I got lucky and the live rock really was that good because they lived). Also, think about what we do to frag corals, we cut their soft little bodies up with blades, then glue or tie them down to pieces of rock and wait for them to start growing again.
Walking_Target
I've seen my local SW guy use reef epoxy to cover up some GSP on a nice piece of LR. The idea being he wanted to use it for growing Rics on.

Very long story short: They GSP ened up pushing THROUGH the epoxy and continuing to grow. GSP is like the zombies of coral. They only way to kill it is to remove the head or destroy the brain, anything else you do will not have any effect.

FWIW, some corals are sensitive. I've got $20 of clove polyp frags in my tank that haven't been open in about 2 weeks. I'm not sure if they're going to make it at this point. It just so happens that 'common' mushrooms, zoas and most encrusters (GSP, Briarium Stecchi, etc) are pretty damn hard to kill.
