Full Version: Rimless Tanks Dangerous?

I saw a rimless 57 gallon at my fish store, 36x18x21, and it looked fantastic, but the rimless scares me pretty bad. Is it any less safe than the same tank, but with rims on it? I don't want my tank to bust and lose all of my coral...

Thanks!!

Usually rimless tanks are built with thicker glass/acrylic and higher grade silicone.
They were built to be rimless so there shouldnt be a problem.

Did it have eurobracing?

Regardless, as long as the glass is thick enough, it should be safe.

They make me nervous too, but there are many successfuly tanks out there that are rimless. I think 57 gallons is pushing it though.

No. What I'm worried about is the silicone seem. The glass looked about 3/8 an inch. Maybe more.

I know that there are 70 gallon rimless tanks, but it still scares me too. But 40 breeders tend to bow out also... In a non-rimless tank, the only other addition is a rim around the top of the tank, correct?

elos.....thats all i have to say. lol

they make huge rimless tanks. it all depends on the brand. you get what you pay for.

I had a rimless solana tank that did great, I think the look on those is really nice and sleek smile.gif

tanks with trim (a rim) or euro bracing are not any safer than rimless tanks if the tank is made correctly Period

my LFS guy has a 110g custom Starfire glass tank, braceless with overflow tubes running through the bottom. Thing is at least 4 years old and has been running a wavebox for a good portion of it's life.

if it was built to be rimless, yes it is safe.

if it is a de-trimmed tank (any size), it has higher risk of danger... i personally wouldn't trust any detrimmed tank above 5.5 gallons or 10 gallon at max.
