it said the BTA tentacles only become swollen
and bulbous when they have acquired clownfish.

And also said BTA are totally reliant on clownfish
and cannot survive without them because the clownfish
will protect them form being ate by butterflyfish.

Scientists have argued over the exact cause of the bubble-tips and have been unable to find conclusive evidence for their appearance or lack thereof. BTAs are entirely capable of surviving without clownfish although they would most likely be eaten without their protection in the wild.
