Diatoms! FTS! dying GSP! Lets hope not!

What is this white film stuff on my GSP? and what can I do about it?
pismo_reefer
The white film is dead flesh... srry. sad.gif
got2envy
use a soft brush and clean the mat...I do this to mine often as it collects detrius and the polyps don't open up all the way smile.gif
ir0n_ma1den
came back from the LFS with a cleanup crew and a GSP frag.

I also increased the lights to 60% white, 100% RB. This should be sufficient, right?

CUC:

4x Margerita snails
1x Turbo snail
3x nassarius snails
2x hermits

I'll put pics up later tonight

Tank is looking real nice man! I need some LEDs!

FTS:

New additions:

1x cleaner shrimp
1x bleaching brain coral (was only $6.30!)

I've also started dosing DT's nano phyto every other day.

What can I do to nurse the brain back to health?

evilc66
Ease up on the phyto for now. You don't have enough in the tank to use it, and you will just up your nitrates. Once a week for now is more than enough.
opy01
make sure all your perameters are in check and maybe target feed it brine or something. You may also want to try dipping it in something like Revive Coral Cleaner. Also it isnt bleaching, that is bone you see at the top of the brain. Alot of the brain has died.

So was this a Mantis back in this picture?

Thank god I've only dosed once. Also, I have half a filter pad in my filter, should I take that out now? I have cheato in there also.

This is a noob question, but where do I target feed? what does a mouth look like?

Will this brain be able to come back to health, or is it a lost cause?

I actually have no idea, the day after I took that picture it dissapeared...

you're coming along.

thanks man! I just need some (alot) more corals and a pair of clowns.
opy01
Each of the dimples has at least one mouth. The longer ones can have a couple of mouths. Just turn all flow off and use a eye dropper to lightly spread either small mysis or brine around the living areas. Not all the mouths have to eat so spread the food sparingly so you dont get a nitrate spike. Feed it once a week and if it seems to respond then feed twice a week or once every 5 days. If you have crabs or shimp be sure to keep a close eye on them till feeding is done and the water is flowing again or they will try to steel the food from the brain.

I have a small brain (no jokes please) and it eats several mysis a week and is happy. Yours is a slightly different type of brain but it should eat the same.

It looks like it has STN (slow tissue necrosis) and dipping it can help. If you dip it just be carefull what you dip it in though because too much iodine can make it worse. I have seen LPS dipped in an iodine/vitamin mix for STN and come back fine. I used the Revive Coral Cleaner on an acro that had STN and it came back great.

I have been doing this for 6 months now and have had 2 sick coral from the LFS. One died because I didnt know it was sick till too late but the other is in great health. Being so new to reefing myself it makes me feel good knowing I saved one.

Thanks for the info man!

hopefully I can turn this brain around, I'll go get some mysis today.

So I've had this tank up for about a month and I am using the filter pad that came with the AC70. Is it time to take it out? should I replace it with anything?
ir0n_ma1den
Haven't updated in a while. The tank has successfully gone solo for 7 days and came back perfectly!

The day after I got back, I dipped the brain in melafix and fed it some frozen mysis. Later that night I turned the lights on and the brain had extended it's tentacles! I am hoping this is a sign of recovery.

I have this opaque/white stringy stuff all over the rockwork, I don't know what it is. You can see it on top of the brain and on some of the rocks.

Today I added Snow and Grumpy...

What is the best flake/pellet food to feed my clowns, and how often?
ir0n_ma1den
picked up some pellets for the clowns and saw a pink tip anemone for $18 and 20% off that. I'm pretty sure it is a Condylactus Anenome. Could that work in my tank?
yardboy
They grow like weeds and will be too big for a 10 gallon tank before 6 months is out. But sexy shrimp really take to them.

yea, I researched them more and they aren't really what I was looking for anyways, just thought, "hey a nem for $15?? hmm....".

Before I get any more coral other than my half dead brain and GSP, I think I want to get a BTA or RBTA, my LFS is having a sale right now so I can get one for $40. Should I go for it?

Also, my lighting will be sufficient, right? (evil response needed)

When I go in to pick it up, what should I be looking for health wise?

Coming along nicely! That stuff on your brain looks like hair algea (If you haven't found out yet). For healthy anemones they should look fully inflated, shouldn't look like it's melting, and also most anemones shouldn't be white. I'm not sure if your LEDs will be sufficient for an anemone,im sure an LED expert will chime in
Jake42393
im pretty sure nems require an established tank.. of about 6 months or so..
ribbie
An anemone moves around in your tank until it finds a spot it likes. I wouldnt want to deal with the hassle of it in your tank with your current livestock. It could do some damage. It's not a favorable practice from what I've read.

and the tank is looking great! cool.gif

Got back from blue ribbon koi and Aquatic Obsessions in Manassas, VA and I can say I've never seen LFS's so stock and beautiful! Holy shiett! This blows the place I used to visit out of the water.

I came back with some $20 zoas, $10 Rics, and a $10 frag of blue cloves. I also have a brittle star hitchhiker and some other mysterious hitchhiker that is hiding in the zoos.

Update:

The sun coral is open, but that is because the lights were off before I took the shot. Anyone know how I can keep them open all day?

you just have to feed the suncoral during the day on a regular basis. After a while they will get used to the schedule and be open at that time. Did you do a write up or take photos of you LED setup? Looks good!

It's been a long time since I've updated, and for good reason. I hate to admit it, but I've neglected my tank for the past 2 months (e.g. few water changes). Hopefully you guys can make suggestions to help me on the right track again. I preformed a 3 gallon water change on Sunday and intense scrubbing twice this week.

I definitely have bubble algae (got an emerald crab to help that) and some kind of deep reddish algae.

These are pics of my AC110 (fuge). Maybe it's because of the light i'm using over it, but I'm getting bad algae in there too.

Params:

pH 8.8

Ammonia 0

Nitrate 0

Nitrite 0
BLoCkCliMbeR
holy salt creep! ohmy.gif

you could at least wipe the tank off before you take pics

first off you HAVE nitrates.. even if they are not detectable by the test kit they are tere or there would not be such a bad algae problem. Phosphates are another possibility for the algae but not as likely as nitrates.

Reduced feeding, reduced lights, more clean up crew more frequent water change.. hopefully those get you bac on track .
