Anyone know what type of brittle starfish these are? They're about the size of a 50-cent piece, and black and white. I took my heater out tonight to clean it and they were behind it. Most of the rock in the tank is Caribbean.

+1 to them being harmless. I'd love to give you a specific name, but I can't really describe them other than "micro brittle star" If they start getting much bigger then they aren't micro stars & you can re-evaluate them then.

oh, I know they're harmless- I knew one was in my tank awhile back because I saw its arm poking out. They're not really micro-brittle stars, because they're quite a bit larger than that. I checked Orphic's link and don't see any there that resemble it.

They look similar to what diane had in her pico.

Is it racist to say I think all brittle stars look alike?

My brittle stars are that size too. Bigger than micro so they're even better. Mini I guess.

I know they're not your typical white/grey/brown micro brittle star, but what else do you call them? I have several of these in my tank (my sixline figured out how to eat the smaller ones) and they are all slightly bigger than a quarter up to maybe a 50 cent piece. If you do get a positive I.D. please share it.

Sorry, I thought it was that. I think it's "c est ma".

Not sure of their name either, but I've seen them often enough. Never bigger than a ~50-cent piece, like you say, and are usually more active(arm waving for food) during the day vs the white "micros".

Perhaps Diane or even Dr. Ron on Marine Depot forums would know the name.
