I'm STHUPER!!

El Fab's guide has everything you could possible need to know.

I picked up the finnex 4g. Good price, nice looking tank and has everything you need right there in the box.

Which surface skimmer filter did you purchase?

ok....sorry pico keepers....i apologize in advance

i see alot of picos set up, and most folks either give up on them , or go bigger...i think every other post is a pico set up post...or a what fish can i keep in a thimble

so you think youll save money eh?

a pico is a pia......you have to watch/babysit them...things can go wrong much much faster in that small volume of water and they are typically not much cheaper than a larger AIO... and if you dont have an ro unit or another larger tank set up, thats alot of foot work youll be doing, getting water and what not...

so you buy the pico set up then.....

they require constant top offs.....sure you can get an auto top off, but imo thats not gonna keep cost down if your trying to save money by running small....so thats 30-150 bucks on top of tank cost...they loose water in a matter of hours....this makes keeping good water chemistry/stability a challenge.

they are much more sensitive to temp swings .....you can put a fan on it, but please re-read above statement

most pico sets will make you want a new light, sure some of the better sets have half way decent lights, but most folks upgrade....add another 50 bucks to set up price....

they are small.....youll get the itch to go bigger b/c the space limits you so much...your fish selection is nil at best.

im not saying its not possible, its just not a tank style id advise someone to begin with, it takes alot of paitence and nurturing to have a sucessful one, and if you have a busy life and cant spend that extra time on the tank, it will suffer

personally, id go bigger, for what you would spend to have a phat pico, you could have a really nice tank out of the box, like a cadlight 12, or even some of the older style AIO like the aquapod, biocube or nanocube, cheaper yet if you can find a quitter on craigslist getting rid of one.....

i know the last 3 will make you want bigger lights, (eww pc lights right? wtf do you think youd run on a pico?) but they have been around for a bit, and the stock older style AIO can still keep a good variaty of corals out of the box, with half the problems youd have babysitting a pico

if space is a reason you want to rock small, then maybe a nanocube 6 or biocube 8 would suit your needs....they probably pack more light power than most picos on the market.....18 watt PC retros to add more ooommmfff to the tank are cheap...like less than 20 bucks cheap from nanotuners..

if i was wanting a pico to pimp and money wasnt a deciding factor, and i wanted all the best features in a tank that a maker had to offer, id go deli hands down, with led of course......

the picotopes & finnex 4 are nice, but needs new light and filters, toms deco tank is pretty good, has more light power than the last two, but its cheap plastic...i ended up ditching the tank and used the light on a 2.5 aga....and yes the bulb on the tom's can be changed, you can buy a stock one, or any straight pin will fit.....

if you have the paitence to try this style of reefing, then choose your weapons wisely.

buy deli's tank i wanna see more of these set up....

its not that expensive....

Orphicdragon
blockclimber is (as usual) correct on all points.

The finnex works for me, but I have plans for light upgrade and am going the AC Fuge route. Also, I am home all day and that gives me time to obsess over every little thing. smile.gif

Additionally, the things I have in the pico's are all things that I can house in one of my larger tanks should something go awry or worry me. I don't buy anything thinking strictly of the pico, if it would be suitable for a pico but NOT one of my larger tanks, it doesn't get purchased.

Thank you for the kind words and recommendation.
My main reason for starting PicO Aquariums was because of the lack of high quality pico units.
Most tanks are cheap plastic and don't last the long haul. ADA makes great tanks for pico's but no AIO. You have to drill or add a HOB. Others are acrylic and look great but scratch very easily and retain much more heat in the unit which is a big problem for pico's.

IMO glass is the best way to go. I offer acrylic only to give more options. I am working on adding new LED units at a much lower cost and I hope to have a system controller soon also. I do all this in my home shop by myself so it's taking some time but I am open to ideas and criticism.

So glad you posted been lookin' for a link to your site biggrin.gif

I'm hoping these catch on so I can have the funds to sponsor Nano-Reef and become a vendor.
In the meantime it's got to be word of mouth.
Orphicdragon
I need to get with you, I think your stuff is the best option for my harlequin tank biggrin.gif

You should make a sig that says "I support PiCo" for awesome word of mouth. I would rock it.
BLoCkCliMbeR
i hear glass cages has bad customer service etc, but ive toyed with the idea of a 1/2 10gal they offer, a standard 10gal tank, chopped in half to make it shallow....

that would be a pimp pico to mess with, and easy to light.....lots of space to play with....

maybe deli can make one with the same dimentions AIO style.....

Can be easily done.
If you can think of it I will build it. If it's a popular tank it goes on the site If it's not..
It goes on the site tongue.gif
