I'd love to see pictures of how it looks in your tank.

Also, any general tips or mods?

Thanks!

I bought Rob's Solana a few months ago. I was running his Euro Reef Skimmer for a while and loved it. However it had a still yet "experimental" impeller on the pump and it has worn down and I had to switch it out to the stock skimmer until I can get a replacement. I actually have the original prototype and the follow up that was made especially for Rob. The only "mod" I've done so far was to enlarge the bottom drain hole a bit more so that I could get the skimmer further down into the first chamber. To my detriment as the impeller started losing effectiveness, I couldn't get it low enough to keep the skimmate at the right level. The only other issue I've had is that if you lose power, when the whole tank comes on, the skimmer fills up before the chamber and you end up flooding the collection cup. Haven't figured out a fix for that yet. Once I get the new and improved impeller, it should be one of the better ones on the market.

That is why I slightly bored out the bottom drain hole. If you do that, then it doesn't have to sit so high on the tank. I have a sunpod on my Solana and now the top of the collection cup sits slightly below the top of the light so you can't see it when viewing from the front. It still does stick up out of the first chamber by about 4" or so. I doubt you'd still be able to run a quad fan on it. I am looking into putting a dual on there, but now that temps have dropped, I don't need the cooling as much. It did kick up that awesome amount of foam though when the impeller was new. Apparently they changed the materials used for the impeller and the wearing down won't happen anymore. I did get a small amount of microbubbles now and then. Not sure if they've changed the design since my prototype.

Mine just has a cap on the bottom. I see the new ones on their site have some sort of block or sponge in the bottom. Mine just has a small hole in hard plastic. I just bored the hole a bit larger. If you have a newer one, it might not be applicable.
