my LFS sold me a Waratah Anemone but upon further research it seems they are a temperate species.

I have a tank that I keep at ~80degreesF all the time. in my tank i also have a BTA, Clownfish, candy cane coral, frogspawn and mostly just zoas. ppl from this forum said their Waratah nems have done fine @ 78 degrees.
should i adjust my tank temp a couple degrees (and maybe affect all other tank inhabitatns) or just find someone else to take this pretty little nem?

I'd probably find another home for it. Lowering your temp is risking everything in your tank for one nem that may not make it anyway. Putting it in your tank at 78-80...it may live, but that's not its natural environment. I'd take it back to where you got it and demand a refund for being misinformed!

once source i read says that Waratah anemonies are found naturally in Shark's bay, which is a tropical region. so at this point i don't feel so much misinformed as confused. not really sure what source to believe. it's a pretty nem though and i would like not to have to get rid of it if I don't have to. Has anyone had experience with keeping these?

your neme will be fine. i kept mine with all my coral and it's been doing fine. the wholesaler where i found mine at kept theirs in the same water temp as all their other neme.

I believe they need temperate tanks or pretty cold reef tanks. More like 75 maximum. I could be wrong, but it might be like catalina gobies that do ok at high temps for a while, but eventually die because of it.
Do not toss it lol

xiognaquatics- how long have you had your watarah???
i really like it and want to keep it so i think i'm going to have it at ~78 degrees for a bit. if it's not looking well in a couple weeks i'll definitely come back here to try to find a good home for it instead of returning it to the LFS.

the little nem was not looking pleased. returned it to the LFS for a full refund but i hope they don't sell it to an unsuitable home again.

I kept a bunch for over a year in an 80-82 degree tank, they're very adaptable as long as you keep them well fed. They've got the coolest way of breeding too where they just spit out mini baby anemones every couple of months

Unfortunate, but you got your money back and your tank is no longer at risk from the potential death of the anemone. I would say you made a good decision.
