So I added rocks to the tank. Again, I'm going with very minimal aquascaping, and hope to maximize space for corals, while keeping a pretty open layout for flow and swimming room. I have my first corals coming in tomorrow, so I may have to add water tonight

I'm debating between 2 vortech on the same side, vs one on each end. Let me know what you think.

Nov 11 2009, 08:04 PM
Looking great! I would put one on each side.
Did you build the tank?

I absolutly love the simplicity of your tanks! Makes me want to start another with a whole different aproach.

Dave - I didn't build the tank, it was built locally. I keeping going back/forth with the placement.
John - Thanks

. I'm trying something really simple and clean this time around. Kinda get that old, dead, tank out of my memory

Getting some corals today
fiddly_foo
Nov 12 2009, 02:24 PM
I would put the vortechs on the same side but stager them so one up on the top left and the other on the bottom right that will get som good even flow and you can have it turned up on reef crest up top and lower on loogon mode on the bottom but thats just my idea looking foward to the tank filled with some corals good luck
imcosmokramer
Nov 12 2009, 02:39 PM
that sounds about right fiddly. Corals just got here

Nov 12 2009, 04:32 PM

Did you cure the rock?
-Dave
imcosmokramer
Nov 12 2009, 04:36 PM
Dave, rock was not cured, and now it's messing with my skimmer. it'll be ok in a day or two.
imcosmokramer
Nov 14 2009, 11:40 AM
Ok, skimmer is back up and running normally.
I added some corals from my frag tank yesterday, and I thought I'd add an update.
I will be testing different types of bulbs and fixtures on this tank, so I'm starting with a VERY white bulb, the Ushio 14K. White the growth and output on the bulb are excellent, I don't feel that I would ever use it on it's own. The colors are just not there. I will try some other bulbs and post photos for comparison.
I will take some macros of the corals under this light, and add them as well.

I'll get some more photos tomorrow. Hopefully with a new bulb (either a 20k Ushio or a 15K XM).
I have not added the second vortech, but I will probably do that tomorrow as well. .

argh, I missed my chance to change the bulb AGAIN. This time I just shut the lights off and I'm waiting for them to cool down

Nov 15 2009, 11:32 AM
I woke up this morning with the intention of changing bulbs on my tank, and had gotten downstairs to late...lights were already on. I weighed waiting one more day against turning the lights off....and turning the lights off won.
30 minutes later, I was changing the bulb and wiping down the glass protector. I turned the lights on and awaited anxiously.
I love it! The ushio 14K bulb was just a bit yellow for me. This new XM bulb is really nice and crisp. The colors look great, and the bulb is nice and bright. I'm going to wait and see what it looks like in a few days, once it's burned in.

Really nice tank, super clean. The XM 15k bulb is pretty nice, I ran two for a year before switching to Phoenix 14ks. I don't know how great they are for growth though, I can't really remember.

How did you like the Phoenix 14K?
Which bulb did you not know about growth?
You running any supplemental?

Did I mis the post. You never let your tank and dead rock cycle? Are you acclimatimg your corals to the new bulbs? Hope you did or you may have some issues with your sps you threw in there. Tanks look great btw.

sorry, I just added dry rock and fresh SW to the tank. it's plumbed in with a larger established system, so there won't be a cycle. Good looking out though
As for the clownfish, I don't like snowflake, but picassos are on the list for sure!

Ah ok. Just watch out for light shock From switching bulbs, would hate to see all those great sps pieces suffer.

well, all the lights are going to be new, and around the same spectrum, but maybe I'll add some eggcrate to defuse the light a bit.
