Full Version: Who can go close to MH?

So I have been reading up on lots of coral, and currently have some shrooms, ricordia, kenya tree, all near the bottom or out of the direct shine of the 150 W MH.

The way my LR is positioned, I have a top ''shelf'' about 6 inches from the water surface, making it about 8~10 inches from the light itself. I'm a little nervous this is TOO close...

Could I try acropora this close? Would it only INTENSIFY their color?

My tank is the nanotuners mod jbj 28 HQI, with 2x18w actinic. All params good, water movement good, blah blah.
PS I have some montipora capri, orange and purple rim a little more than1/2 way down, doing great, beautiful color. Oh, and a maxima who INSISTS on being on the sandbed, NOT on ANY LR and certainly no where off the bottom. His decision, NOT mine.

That system puts out a HIGH high amount fo light on the order of 150+par even at the bottom of the tank. as you go higher IIRC, it jumps in orders of magnitudes. without the pcs 4" from the surface is 730 par on the regular system/reg bulbs. youd have to slowly adjust the corals to be placed there but anything CAN be put there with maybe a few id stay away from like lps. but yes sps should be just fine there. good luck

Ok well, I was hoping one of the SPS masters would hop in, but I will throw what I know out there smile.gif

Acro's dig intense light. When you see 'em on the reef they are high up in full sun. I can't see why 8-10" would be too close.

Yes, you can grow any SPS that loves high light with your setup.

Awesome guys, thanks! I'll acclimate them slowly...with all that light they should be pretty happy and colorful then!

I've had SPS, Zoa's, Kenya Trees, Xenia, pretty much a lot of stuff extremely close to my light- and this was a 250W in my 28g.

Cool- Yeah i wasn't sure if I put things ''too close'' to the light, if they would just discolor or die altogether. I guess nothign can really compete with the sun though, right?!

truth, just check to make sure the coral isn't making a huge from light intensity. so as long as you have corals coming from lower light tanks make sure you acclimate them steadily.

Red SPS would do great up there if your water quality's up to par, tabletops and millis love that super high light smile.gif
