You have alot of tanks
pisces4u
Nov 7 2009, 11:47 AM
So I've ben busy modding the tank!
(Since my 50g crashed and took out all my frags I had cut, I need to alter my stocking plan and will only be using 1 of the FNI fixtures in this picture.)

And during the de-rimming process...

Rimless! At least just the top. It was a pain in the butt and I destroyed my fingers so I'm just gonna leave the bottom on.

I'm water testing it now... spray paint on the back panel is next!

So far so good. Next time buy a bottle of acetone (fingernail polish remover) and you will kick yourself at how easy the plastic falls off

I was going to suggest you hold out on the 5.5 and join this 10g contest, but I knew you'd beat me

C'mon, the more replies the merrier
Apparently, it's much easier with acetone as per gabe's reply. I went to school for special effects makeup though and had so many horror stories about acetone brainwashed into me that I won't let the stuff in my house anymore.
Someone posted a pictorial walkthrough on de-rimming a 10g last week but I've lost the thread. Basically, you cut under the rim with some razor blades and try to separate as much of the silicone from the plastic as you can. It takes a lot of patience and muscle, but I'm huge so it wasn't that bad

(j/k)
It looks slick, so I'd do it again any day but it did take about two hours to take the top off and scrape all the silicone residue.

Nov 7 2009, 03:55 PM
Well I am off next Fri-Mon so I will de rim methinx
I am guessing that acetone eats through the silicone..so should I try and get some inbetween the plastic and glass before breaking the trim off? sounds messy
I shall wear my motorcycle kevlar gloves
pisces4u
Nov 7 2009, 03:59 PM
Kevlar will help if you use crappy non-locking utility knives like me, but the blood smears on the glass when I was done were strangely fulfilling.
AFAIK, acetone will soak through kevlar and is also absorbed through you pores. I dunno what you could wear to protect your liver from that junk.

Nov 7 2009, 04:03 PM
Dayumm! I did not know acetone was so deadly
I like my motorcycle gloves too much, I suppose I coluld use my gardening gloves...even tho I don't have a garden
I think I will def try this and look for the thread you mentioned...thanks for the inspiration

No worries, I stole the idea from Tenacious716 lol. He's a local that just de-rimmed a 5.5g. Imitation is the highest form of respect... or something right?
Water test day 3 so far so good. Maybe I'll have time to spray paint this thing this weekend.

I've been dying to get in on a contest since I read about the one Maria won
I had so many concepts for this contest, I had to ask around my local club for advice on which one to go with.
I just wish next weekend was here so I could work on the rock and frags and stop staring at this pile of equipment.

Ahhhhhh! 10g rimless makes me nervous... such thin glass!
Good luck
pisces4u
Nov 7 2009, 10:59 PM
Aww man don't make me nervous now!
If someone would go to the trouble of writing a step-by-step guide on de-rimming a 10g, it stands to reason that the finished product would be stable yeah?
My biggest worry is a big 'ole ac110 hanging on the back. At 1.25g, that's more than ten pounds. I may have to make a stand for the HOB lol.

I can't wait to see pics of it stocked! I would definitely not put an unsupported HOB filter on a de-rimmed tank, just since it is already so weak. I also recently de-rimmed a 10 gallon tank I had sitting around, though after I read the horror stories I'm kinda afraid to set it up. I found the actual process of removing the trim quite easily. Loosen silicone with a thin knife, make slits in plastic with a hacksaw, rip trim off. Removing the silicone though, that is an entirely different story. I think I was scraping at the silicone for at least 2 hours, and it still doesn't look that great. I found that rubbing alcohol and a new set of fresh razors were the best tools (I only had 1 old razor blade, so it took awhile). Good luck with the tank!
I found this a very informative article on de-rimming tanks:

I have heard the biggest problem with de-rimming the bottom is that the glass can be off enough to cause problems with it stressing one of the silicon joints. When I talked to Patrick1234 in person this past weekend, he made a lot of good points about tank failures. They are almost always failures in the joints and seems, meaning the silicon wasn't properly put on the tank (bubbles and the such). Anyway, he is really keen on this kind of thing. I'm just reiterating what he already told me, lol.

Well, back to the drawing board.
My 50g display crashed this past weekend when a Marineland Stealth heater exploded. All my SPS died as did the 18 frags I had on a rack in there for my contest tank.
I"ve already received all my equipment and rock for the contest so I'm going to stick with it, I'll just need a new stocking plan.
I'm really behind now too from all the chaos. Still need to spray paint the back panel and mod the ac110. I'd like to hang the t5's too for a cleaner look so maybe I'll build a PVC arm or something.
The local club is organizing a frag swap this weekend also which I was planning on taking a couple dozen pieces to. Either way, it's going to be a crazy weekend with the swap on Sat and the contest start on Sun.

Got2Envy; I've got a 16.5'' on my rimless 5.5G wih no issues. If for some reason you decide you want to hang it, lmk and I will my sunpod kit to ya cheap.

Wow, thanks all.
My inspiration was a simple bonsai look. I painted the back and bottom black and won't be uding any sand. Corals are chosen and sitting in my display and frag systems for now, but I'm still clueless on fish.
I have a lot of negative space so I'd like an active swimmer, not a clown, and something away from the usual gobies and blennies. Any recommendations?

The base is one solid rock. Actually, half of the rock I orignally intended. The beastly slab I picked up for the base of the bonsai tree was a 13lb rock that the LFS robbed me on. After playing with my tree formation, I decided it was too big and carefully chopped it in half.
