I understand the one-way trip for a clown is sexless>>male>>female, but my question is how long will it take a male clown once the female dies, to become the female ?

I purchased 2 small Ocellaris Clowns; ClownA and ClownB, 2 days later ClownB died.
I took it back and got ClownC at no charge. ClownC was larger than ClownA. after 3 days ClownC looked sick so it took it back in exchange for ClownD at no charge. ClownD was even larger and lived happily with ClownA for a week and a half. Last night ClownD was swimming vertically, and quickly died.

I feel like leaving ClownA alone for a while, for it and my tank to mature. How long until it becomes the female if left alone? Its pretty small about 1.2"

If I get ClownE, should it be smaller or larger?

hey! i would like to know the answer for that too. thanks

As far as I have learned....I just baught a pair.
The larger of the two is the dominant female...or will become the female. Mine were already paired, and had been together at the LFS for atleast a month, hope this helps.
If you get a Clown E, make it smaller, it can take on the male roll...

another question is, why are your fish dying so often? is it your tank, or the LFS!

Yeah that is a good question....are you testing your water????
cruiZe
yeah, why ARE they dying? Well I know Clown B and C defiantly had brook (clownfish disease) so i took C back to be rehabilitated by the LFS. They dipped clown D and said she was clean, and she did last a while, then started to gasp and swim vertically, didn't look like the same disease, but she also hadn't been eating. The water is great, 0,0,10 maybe even 5 nitrates. The pH is around 8.0 -8.2, waiting for it to stabilize higher with the new fuge and chaeto.

Nothing that should be killing fish. esp when ClownA is fine and has a great appetite, as well as 3 shrimp that are hungry, spawning and molting.

I am very meticulous about the tank, removing un-eaten food, shrimp molts, floating debris quickly. I also have been changing the filter floss 2x a week as the bluelegs have been destroying the hair algae, and stirring up a lot.

clowns will remain sexless until paired. Clown E should be smaller to fill the role of the male. Clown A will become the female as soon as two weeks. Once they become female they can never change back. Buy better fish or take better care of them. What would happen if you kill clown Z.

are you getting good surface agitation? could be low dissolved oxygen in the water

ClownA has been the smallest in the tank for over 2 weeks, so he is def male now right? If I get a larger one soon wouldn't that be ok? I'm worried I won't be able to fine a smaller one, and I would rather them not fight if equal size (even more stress)

If I get to clown Z, i think i'll drink the tank water.

My HOB filter and my fuge return both discharge on the surface, there are always ripples and small waves, but never bubbles. Is agitation just ripples on the surface, or does it have to be breaking water (ie pouring a cup of water, bubbles)
HeyLookItsCaps
no thats perfect. you just want disturbance on the surface. scratch that off the list.

ok, what else? been feeding frozen mysis (thawed and rinsed first) shrimp LOVE them, cleaners eat more than the clown does. Tried to switch it up with flakes for the clown, but he's not interested. But clownA has been eating at least half a mysis, sometimes a whole one, per day

You can get a larger clown that's fine. It sounds like your getting these fish young. That can be part of your problem keeping them alive. Don't worry too much about sexing them if your getting juvies they will work it out amongst themselves. If your worried for breeding purposes get three and see who pairs up. It can take years for them to start breeding so be patient. Check out my new true and false perc. And my older pair is my profile pic.
