I was looking at a web site that basically said if you have softies and SPS in the same tank that it is a compromise for both types. The implication was stick with only softies or SPS...This doesn't make sense to me as I see so many tank shots with both. Reason I ask is that I have been only a soft coral person for years but now want to add SPS to my main display tank (29 gal high - 36 inch Aquatic life T5 4 x 54) Comments? Thanks in advance.

I think it can be done! It all depends on which softies you are talking about. If its just zoos, shrooms and rics, it is perfectly fine to have SPS. In other hands leather corals can relese some chemicals that is bad for sps!

maybe their saying that the softies might take over the sps in the future. but with good trimming and bounderies and location on ur softies. it would be just fine

Many softies exctrete some type of chemical that effects sps. They just dont lov eachother and can greatly effect the growth of sps. i had a mixed reef in my 29 and i was not satisfied with how the sps was looking so i set up a 12g for my softies, the difference was seen within a week! Leathers r extremely territorial and release all sorts of stuff that hinders sps. i had sps with zoas and rics and a few lps. I know they were all at war. i could easily tell once i took them out. but thats my experience.

I keep zoa's in a SPS dominated tank, and not just a few zoa's. As long as you stay away from leathers you will be ok. Just my experience

just run good carbon and a skimmer and you will counteract any chemical warfare.
