I was in the same boat i really wanted 1D4 but its out of my budget since photography is just a hobby for me. But the 7D literally has everything i ever wanted in a body.Im going to go take some shots and ill let you know how she performs.
05XRunner
yea...Thats why i was considering it as well. This is a hobby for me and I make no money off of it. So I dont NEED a 1 series..but god After owning one for 2years it is almost impossible to shoot with anything but one now sad.gif

short answer YES
Long answer
better resolution, much cleaner high ISO, much faster FPS, better AF system with more points, better 63 zone metering, better build, weather sealed, should I stop now or keep going

Everthing OX5 said and a bunch more. It depends though if you really need all the features.
Rehype
I uploaded this quick test. Its not much but i just wanted to see the video quality@60 frames a second. All i can say is WOW. The body handles like a dream. Its extremely responsive and the AF is very snappy. It even makes my Canon 100mm macro focus fast and accurately(It hunts like a beast in low light on any rebel body)Its going to take me a while before i can figure out the best AF settings but i must say out of the box it is very accurate. Its a bit larger than the 5DII but it feels very comfortable(at least in my hands) The Viewfinder is huge compared to any rebel and slightly smaller than the 5DII. I have to play with a bit more because i havent used a bunch of features as of yet. But my initial impressions are ive found the perfect all around slr.Its totally exceeded my expectations...

i'm still thrilled with my 5D classic. HD video on a DSLR is still nothing more than a gimmick.

nice cam! an xsi is in the dinosaur ages? the cam my family has is a 20d!

I never hated the video capability i for one was pretty happy to be able to shoot video and stills from one body. Lugging both a video camera and an slr/lenses was a bit troublesome. JMO

I actually like having video capabilities on a dslr. Doesn't take anything away from the camera working as a camera.

do u have to manual focus to shoot video? if so, that's a drag. but nice camera otherwise, the high ISO will be useful!

It may seem like a gimmick but video has been on point & shoots for years. I feel the feature is there if you want to use it.Its not like you lose the ability to shoot stills. Its the same as Exposure bracketing. Not every photog likes to shoot HDR but for the ones that do its priceless.

Yep for the most part but with a little practice its not that difficult. Ive been manual focusing for a few years and i dont mind it at all.

only downside, not full frame dry.gif

I have one as well. The major problem I'm having with it is, except for DPP, no software can read its RAW format.

he had the same mentality as you, but now he wants one because of the video.

Is that a bad thing? huh.gif Really why are you so against video in an slr? Like it or not its going to be a feature of Canon and nikon slrs for years to come.
disaster999
i didnt say it was a bad thing.

i just find it funny how the strong voices of the photography section all didnt care for the video function when it was first introduced, but now they all cant get enough of it.

i for one like the idea for a HD recorder in a DSLR. it beats having to carry a dslr and a hd recorder.
Rehype
Oh my bad

I think everyone was strongly against it until they actually got a chance to play around with it and saw the quality of the videos. Will slrs with video replace traditional camcorders?Absolutely not but for the ones willing to make proper use of it you can really get some stellar results without having to have two separate pieces of equipment. JMO

meh, whatever. i suck enough at taking static pictures - i can't imagine trying to master moving video!

besides, i have one of these!

jokercykoe
Not trying to hijack, but the video capabilities of dslrs are just getting better and better. You also get the option to use multiple lenses for different types of shots.

Heres a vid shot with just the new 1d mark iv. Insane.

Exactly Joker.

While that $150 mino camcorder is nice for the money, it doesn't compete with the telephoto recording you can do, and then switch to a wide angle lens.
Nice camcorders are so damn expensive, and so are the lenses. A decent midrange SLR is much more affordable when you want different shots and angles, and even more so when you're already buying one.

See what your not realizing is..This is nanoreef and most of the people here in the Photography section are "PRO" Photogs. Or so they seem to think with alot of comments I keep reading. its pretty annoying watching them try to give people issues about photos for use acting like their stuff is worth big bucks and they cant hand them out. Stop acting like your photos are important that you have to be such a dick about when someone ask to use them.

I guess since when the video first was implemented I didnt think it was a good thing because the nikon D90 sucked at it soo bad with the rolling shutter problems and all. Canon seems to have done a very good job with it and is much more appealing. Its easy to not like something at first when its released with poor quality and then to change your opinion when its done right and the end results are much better.
cuboy
I rather have the 7d for cheaper without HD Vid recording.

I think that's why alot of people complain. That it's not necessary and could possibly have a lower price tag if it came without it.

i disagree - there is no extra hardware required to enable the HD video capability in DSLRs

sure, there is some overhead in terms of software development costs, and maybe the CMOS -> processor -> storage pipe needed to be beefed up (although I doubt that), but we're talking maybe $50 cheaper MAX
Rehype
+1. If you want a slr without video a 50D would be a great option
Lalani
Not sure if you said, but, have you updated the firmware?
Rehype
It was already updated by Canon
