Full Version: Photography for Sea in the City

So a local store to me, Sea in the City, wants me to come in and work in the coral farm, help out with the shop, etc. One of the things I'm doing for them is taking pictures for the future website. WELL, I was at the shop for a few hours snapping pictures, and I plugged the card into the computer to start looking at the pictures and the card corrupts huh.gif

I was only able to save PART of one shot today, so I'll post that but nonetheless I'm pretty bummed. I'll be heading back either tomorrow or the day after to take some more, so I'll use this thread to post up what I take! Feel free to give me comments and criticism, as photography is really only a small hobby to me and I would like to improve.

Here's the "teaser" I have:

Are you sure the files are totally corrupted?

Not really, I'm not used to digital photography. Here is one, untouched, off of the memory card:

And thats one of the BEST I can get off of it.

You sure it's the files, or your camera?

Not my camera, but a good thought. I'll look into that.
It's a 40D btw.

Okay so now I'm kind of confused. I tried to open them in helicon filter, and in the sidebar some of them are still showing up bad, but some look completely fine (or close). When I click on them though, they still show up messed up. I took a screenshot of one example (the image I'm viewing is the blasto highlighted in red)

Anyone have any ideas?

format the card in the camera...should resolve any issues down the road

I format prior to every use

I had this issue. In my case it was a usb problem in my computer and the files became corrupt during transfer. They came out fine when I wrote them to another machine.

+1

if it looks fine off your lcd preview, then the file isn't corrupted.

It's the transfer from card to pc that is getting corrupted.

using a usb memory card reader? try a different usb slot or a different card reader

usb direct camera to pc, try a different usb slot or a different cord

built in pc memory card reader, try getting an external usb card reader or directly plugging the camera to pc via usb cord.

Yeah I think that was the problem, I was able to get the files off correctly this time. The only problem is that I forgot my hard drive! I sent two to my e-mail real fast before I left (had somewhere to be) so I could give another preview, but things worked out pretty well this time.

The only adjustments to these were the white balance, as it wasn't correct from the raw file. Will hopefully have the rest up this weekend.

Okay, getting the hang of photoshopping without taking away from the image. I did a fade correction on this, and also adjusted the color balance a little bit. I feel like this is the most accurate I have gotten so far:

Any feedback is appreciated.

Yes, that.

High quality photos in my opinion. Well composed and technically accurate. There are some small highlights on the adjusted images though, so keep tweaking.

Seriously though, nice job. Photography is an expensive hobby. I'll stick with my P&S for now...

Thank you, ill try messing around a bit more and see what I can get. Once I get the hang of working with the programs, my useless posts should stop. Until then ill need advice / feedback on what to do to correct images.

And yeah, this is the first time I've really done anything with photography since high school photography class, and I wish I owned this camera!

One of my favorite sites for photography is http://www.photosig.com

It's basically a site where you submit your photos and other people critique them.

Nice photo's by the way.

Wow thanks those look good. The background on the first looks a little too purple, but maybe thats just how the picture turned out.

And thanks, I'm actually new to this whole digital thing so that means a lot.
Would you mind PMing me with what you did to them?

Nice shots. I used to go to SITC all the time, when I lived down there. It's a nice little shop. Are they still in that too-small warehouse strip? Great coral, and very nice people there.

Thanks!

And yeah, they're still over on Gaston Foster so they really could use some more room haha. But agreed, very good stuff and really nice people.

Okay, got the rest of that batch of pictures, although I'm really not all that happy with them. I also realize I suck at photoshop, so if someone is going to correct them just e-mail the corrections to schgriffith(at)gmail(dot)com and I'll edit this post. Thanks!

Those are all sick shots. Looks like you're touching them up pretty well to me.

I would edit your email to be unrecognizable to indexing bots on the web. You'll be spammed out of your mind before you know what happened.
