So I wake up to go look over at my 45g and sometime last night my fire shrimp molted(scared the $hit out of me at first lol). On closer examination it appears that he lost his big pincers in the process too. Why do I get the feeling this isn't normal? Any suggestions or feedback from more seasoned members. I am aware of the room for error in molting and glad he didn't die during the process, but it still kind of has me a little nervous. I'll try to get a pic.

not sure if this helps at all but mine just molted a couple days ago and did not lose its pincers

but I have no idea if this is a bad thing or not

It happens from time to time. Usually they grow back within the next few molts. Try to test your iodine levels in your tank. Improper iodine levels could lead to complications during molting. If your iodine levels are fine then just wait a couple of molts to see if they grow back. But as of right now, as long as it can eat, there isn't much to worry about.

Thx for the reply. I'll run out later and grab an iodine test kit just to check. Little guy is def eating like a pig! Do they usually look a bit dusty(only word I can think to describe it) before they molt or did mine just crawl around in the cave to much? I def. feel a lot better...still miss his little pincers though laugh.gif

I wouldn't worry he'll grow them back over the next molt or 2. Shrimps pinchers are usually used more for defense rather then eating.

The dusty look was probably his old shell starting to come away from his body.

Along with iodine a swing in salinity can effect a shrimps molting so make sure your salinity is in check also.

sg is always at 1.24. just picked up a iodine/iodide test kit and will see what they're at.

Maybe the beer is OK, the test kit is OK and now you've figured out what happened to the shrimp molting.

Of course everything might look a little different in the fresh morning light cool.gif
