Full Version: Question on Alkalinity
Nano-Reef.com Forums > System Setup > Water Chemistry

Mr. Schertz
It says fill the test tray, add one drop this turns the water blue. Then count the drops till the water turns yellow. Divide the drops by 2 for your Alk reading. Do I count the first drop that turns the water blu,or do I start the count after the first drop? If I total all the drops (9) my Alk is 4.5 if I count after the initail drop (8) my Alk is 4.0
Weetabix7
Not sure.
Is this the Seachem Alk test kit, or a different brand?
Does it measure Alk in Meq/l or dKh?

NVM, I just saw that it's Seachem, which I've used before.
Unless they've changed how they do the test (which is possible), you do count the first drop, which would give you an Alk of 4.5 Meq/l.
That's a little higher than I would expect, although not necessarily bad.
What brand of salt do you use?
Mr. Schertz
Well since you dont add the first drop my Alk would be 4.0 then. I use red sea salt not the pro, just the regular stuff.
JohnOTS
I used to use red sea salt and it always mixed really high.

I wouldn't worry about any of the results you gotten. Sea Chem test kits are bunk.

I like Tropic Marin KH Test Kit. Its very simple, count the drop till the solution turns an orange color. The # of drops is your KH.
