nice design, but u might wanna make that lower section removable so you can access below for siphoning during a water change or when you drop a frag below it. Just my $.02 and horrible run-on sentence.

Interesting, I have always been under the understanding that water does not contain nitrifying bacteria and that it resides on the hard surfaces within our tanks. Am I missing something here?

From what I understand, they're in the water column, but the vast majority live on/in the LR and LS.
Militant Jurist
Nov 3 2009, 06:29 PM
The reason WC water helps is that it contains nutrients for the bacteria to feast upon. When using fresh saltwater, you need to "kick start" the cycle by adding something like a deli shrimp. Using WC water is the same process, but instead of waiting for the shrimp to decay, you've got waterborne nutrients from the start. Even with 0 ammonia, and 0 nitrite on the kit, they are still present in the water. They have to be, or the ammonia-consuming bacteria would die off, and you'd have a mini-cycle every time you fed!
spanko
Nov 3 2009, 06:32 PM
Okay so you are going for the nutrient in the water column not the bacteria. Great thanx for the explanation.

When you're right, you're right...

I'm gonna make a hook to hold this section to the back wall.
that way, when i need to mess with the floor, I'll have a convenient place to set this section......

]
the hook will go directly above the handle of the movable piece.
that way, it will hover over the top rack and not squish anyting
