Full Version: Double Dosed Calcium

Last month, I accidentally refilled my alkalinity solution with calcium solution. So for about a week, I was double dosing calcium before I caught the mistake. The alkalinity dropped to 7 dkh and the ph dropped to 7.5, I've been trying to correct the issue through larger water changes (went from 10% to 20-30% each week) and dosing only alkalinity. None of the corals or other livestock displayed any adverse effects from the overdose of calcium.

I've gotten the alk back to 10.5 dkh but the pH remains in the 7.5-7.8 range and won't budge. Calcium is still over 700, so when will I begin to see any changes? Is there anything else I can do that may help speed the process of recovery?

Everyone on the local forum that I am a member of says that I am on the right track, but after a month I'm not seeing much progress. Things seem to have stabilized.

any advice is appreciated

If you are doing water changes with a reef salt (approx. 440ppm calcium) try temporarily using a marine salt like IO (approx 380ppm calcium). Keep up with the large water changes either way. It will go down with time.

I use Reef Crystals, I had wondered if the Ca in that mix would be a bit high. Using a lower Ca content mix does seem like it would help out. I'll give it a shot, thanks!

you just have to keep up with the water changes until the level falls back to normal. or you can get some clam and SPS and they will suck the calcium dry from your tank.

Excess calcium is not that bad as it will precipitate out (using some of the alkalinity as you noticed). What kind of corals are in the tank?
