boy wonder
should i stand pipe it or ball valve ?trying to quite it down some
Mr. Fosi
No ball valve, that's dangerous.

Is this a bulkhead-only overflow? If so, have you considered doing an external durso?
boy wonder
bulk head is overflow only rite now it's a 1'' bulk head 90 then 1'' clear to the sump .an external durso is a t capped with a small hole drilled in it rite?

Is the gurgle coming from the sump? Or is it a slurping sound coming from the standpipe? Just get some 3/8 aquarium hose and stick it all the way down the drainpipe into the sump. That will let the air excape. It will shut that drain right up.
boy wonder
standpipe? i.e. drain to the sump yes sorry new to this still .

I think your problem is that you have just the bulkhead right? A stand pipe raises the water level in the overflow box. Its just a pvc pipe that sticks straight up. Try reading up on here Overflow diagrams lots of good info.

Essentially, yes. You can vary the size of the hole (which is ok, except you can't make it smaller) or you can pop an air valve on it so you can tune how much air gets in.

Seems to me that an external durso would be the simplest and most cost effective solution here unless you go with a Glass Holes-type. I'm not a big fan of that design though.

I customed my durso by drilling a small hole and putting a coffee stir in the hole and moving it up/down until the drain flow was quiet enough for me. Kinda like the glass holes design.
boy wonder
built a durso tonight and it's a 100 times better what a diff. a little pvc and a vent makes .thanks for the help
Mr. Fosi
Glad it worked out. happy.gif

if theres still any noise put a durso on the bottom end.

I'm going to have to try that!

next best thing to a true herbie style drain, plus it works on things like skimmers n stuff.

I did it light that because I used a 90 degree elbow and barb to hook to vinyl hose, so I didn't have the pvc sticking up with the cap. I just drilled a small hole (just big enough for the coffee stir) in the elbow and put the stir in and adjusted until the flow was right. It takes some playing around with.
