jeremai
Nov 15 2009, 09:32 PM
normally it isn't, but apaprently I have a knack for plumbing, so I'm going to give it a shot. all told, if it doesn't work I'm out $14.
in other news, I got some corals and fish. lol.

The best kind of DIY, the low risk budget!

What kind?!?
jeremai
Nov 16 2009, 08:50 PM
a sixline, a firefish, a paly rock, a zoanthid rock and a few mushrooms. not a bad way to spend a hundred bucks.

lookin good jer

that DIY reactor has my wheels spinning about turning one of those containers into a calcium reactor...
jeremai
Nov 16 2009, 09:07 PM
thanks pufg.

I had the container lying around, it should work well enough. there's a built-in watertight gasket in the lid, it's perfect.

hmmm.... the plastic on those is pretty resilient, too. straight sides and lid make it easy to attach bulkheads, jg fittings, and some egg crate to hold a sponge off the bottom to diffuse water flow over any media you put in there. should work out very well. not something i'd want hanging off the side of my tank but if it's gonna be under a cabinet out of sight function > form. good thinking

Nov 16 2009, 09:41 PM
thanks. I'm thinking of making a hang-on unit out of it, with the pump inside the sump and the actual unit outside, set up like a little closed loop. there's not enough room in the lid for both bulkheads, so I'll have the water enter on the bottom and exit on the top. I also got a valve to control the flow - my MJ is probably overkill, lol.

yeah i've got a mj400 on my TLF phosban reactor and it has to be throttled down about half way for that magic tumbling point with GFO, so i'd definitely recommend a ball valve.

Nov 18 2009, 01:05 AM
tada!

it started out as a HOB unit, but that failed miserably in execution due to inebriation, lol. hopefully this in-sump unit can resurrect the project. tomorrow I'll fit the sponge inserts and give it a test run before adding carbon. wee!!
and no, the union serves absolutely no purpose that I can come up with, so don't ask.

also, couple random shots:

the top just clips on. I'm sure you can find a container with a screw-top lid, that would solve the problem.

so I asked the ginger to put a nori sheet in for the sea hare. he's seen me do it a hundred times - fold sheet, affix to rock, drop rock in tank. well, he was too lazy to attach it to the rock so he just dropped the whole sheet in the tank, which floated over and got sucked through the polario. I now have a thousand tiny pieces of nori floating all around the tank.

Awesome! Sailfins are cool. I really liked mine, but I don't think I'm going to replace him, my bio-load is getting up there. Pink or Orange skunk?

a nephthiid of some sort I imagine. I don't expect it to last long.
this tank is sort of a what-not-to-do. we're sort of just buying whatever seems pretty with no regard as to keeping it alive. so far so good.
