it's an eshopp's overflow, u-tube. it has two 1" drains, but only room for one tube. I think my only option is to throttle back the pump, definitely not ideal. but the only other pump I have is a Mag5, which is under powered.
ugh. it couldn't just go smoothly, could it? I measure tank builds in trips to home depot. this is already shaping up to be a ten-trip job.

True story. Between my house and my aquariums, I could probably claim Lowes or HD as a second residence! For the 29g plumbing alone I probably made three trips to Lowes before I had it working. There are still some changes I want to make, so another trip is in the works.

ok, water is flowing through the sump as it should, no overflowing occurring. I'm slowly dumping salt into the refugium compartment to let it mix. water is still stupid cloudy from the sand - which, in my haste and excitement, I forgot to rinse. there's a filter sock working its magic, but it's only 100 micron iirc, so we'll see how well it works.
everything is coming along swimmingly.

ok, I'm a moron. I lowered the surface skimmer box for the overflow about a centimeter and was able to throttle the return pump almost all the way on without the water level in the display getting uncomfortably high. turns out the overflow can handle what it's rated for, you just have to adjust it properly.
lol.

still a little cloudy, but looking good. I ended up not using most of the rock I found, except the three largest pieces. I'll let it sit like this for a week or so before starting to transfer the 56g over.

Works great, imo. moves a TON of water, and is programmable to switch directions from 15 seconds to 30 minutes. real test comes when I get some coral in there and I can see how it moves, but I'm very happy with it so far.

You are correct. It's essentially a big ass waterchange for the 56.
edit: that is if you swap out some water between the 120 and the 56, which is how I would do it.

you're not worried about the bacterial explosion? i would throw a piece of rock in there for a week just to see what seeding it does to the params. not worth risking the livestock.

I upgraded from a 40 breeder to my 125 with no ill effects. I added more sand and a little dry rock just like Jer is doing. Like I mentioned, it's essentially just a big water change.

the bacteria would need something to feed off of in order to 'explode', and I'm not adding or removing livestock from the system.
besides, I don't own any test kits anyway.

not so much the desert as the vacant lot across from target at the 215 and decatur.
lol.
also, they're HUGE. probably 60+ lbs a piece - definitely heavier than the bag of sand (50 lbs). lifting them up and over the side of the tank - while on a ladder - and not dropping them before positioning them was a feat in and of itself. the ginger done well.

I think the 56g may have been on the verge of crashing, actually. usually when I drain a tank there is a strong low-tide smell. when I drained the 56g though, the smell was sweet, not oceany or seaweedy at all. not sure what to make of it, but I don't like it. at all.
anyways, I like my new aquascape, pics forthcoming. now I just gotta wait for the skimmer to break in, and I can buy a tang! WOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!

That is a good looking scape! I usually hate rock piles, but that one works. Nice choice on the blue background, too.
What kind of Tangs (yes, plural, they're like pringles) are you planning?
jeremai
Nov 12 2009, 09:30 AM
it doesn't look like a rock pile in 3-D. there's just two big ricks in the back that are vertical and the one big rock on the right in the sand. the rest are forming bridges and caves, etc. it looks very open in person. I'll try and get some better perspective shots when the murkiness goes away.
as for large fish stocking, I'm thinking a powder blue tang and a dwarf angel, maybe potter's. or maybe something completely different. who knows?

nah, we have our own 215 beltway here in Las Vegas. but my best friend is moving to san pedro in december, so I'll be driving down a lot. I'd definitely snag a frag or three from you.
