Well as the title askes how often do you change your GFO (granulated ferric oxide) i use a High Capacity similar to Rowaphos. I use 4 tablespoons and change it out every two weeks in my reactor for my 22g tank. I also change my ROX carbon on the same schedule.

thanks for your input in advance
Also i get my stuff from spectrumchemical.com ( where bulkreefsuppy gets there more than likely)

I change mine out when I notice that I have to clean the glass more than twice a week. who needs test kits!!!

Well after i get off work today i can snap a pic it looks the same as the stuff from BRS. I got the stuff with a group buy with a few friends a while back since my friend is a chemist and he got if for a really good discount. I would just say ge the same high capacity stuff from bulk reef supply

laugh.gif you got a point there. the reason i change mine so fast is that my friend dana who's a chemist told be that the gfo becomes exusted with in the first week week and a half. He also told me more isnt better find out how much you need by adding little by little. add too muchcan raise your orp through the roof and its a waste of good media

do you just the standard red GFO the high capacity stuff?
glennr1978
Yeah, you DEFINITELY don't want to add too much too fast. I don't exactly measure mine out (been using the stuff for a while so I have a pretty good "feel" for it), but I only use maaaaybe one tablespoon in my 20g.

This stuff is potent, and can wreck a tank quick if you don't use it properly.

I did 2 teaspoons of it for my 20,
I did it too fast and I killed some of the more nutrient loving zoas.

Basically I find zoas in SPS reefs,
typically small polyps then you find the PPE kind (I've never found them I bought them) in dark lagoons and such.

The ones that were found in pristine water are more happy,
the ones that aren't are beyond unhappy.

I'd go with a half teaspoon then up it slowly.

Anyone else have any opinons on the matter. do people on here use a media bag or do you use some type of media recator?

I've used both (phosban reactor and media bag) with similar results.

Ironically, this thread inspired me to change out my GFO two days ago. Today I woke up to a somewhat browned out orange monti, so I pulled the GFO and plan to put it back in the tank in a day or two. My corals are my test kits, and the orange monti will let me know quick if I've stripped the tank of nutrients too fast.

I do the same thing and agree with your philosophy. In my 34gal I end up changing my GFO every 2-3 weeks (6 table spoons) to help keep a low nutrient reef so my SPS colors stay vibrant. I use the GFO from BulkReefSupply. IMO GFO is GFO wink.gif
