So my daughter has been increasingly afraid of the dark lately and since she loves the BC29 we have I figured lets get her a better nightlight. I plan on running a day light cycle during the night and since her room is so dark during the day running a night cycle during the day.
So here are the basic items so far:
Betta Cube 6x6x8
AC20
Hawaiian Black Caribsea Sand
1/2 pound of live rock
1/2 pound of base rock
10W Marineland Heater (automatically heats to 78, will use when it is brought up from the basement to replace the Stealth)
Coralife Digital Powercenter
Custom LED lighting by cdelicath
Stock ListingGreen Slimer
Blue Tort Staghorn
Multiple Zoas
Sunset Encrusting Monti
Green Monti Cap
2 Sexy Shrimp

Oct 19 2009, 10:42 PM
Sand 10 lbs, a ton left over since I won't use much $16
10W heater $20 on ebay
Betta Cube $22 online
Rio Mini Sun $23 at LFS
Aqua Clear 20 $25
1/2 pound live rock $4 at LFS
1/2 pound base rock $0 had floating around from when I set up my BC29
Water $0 came from my BC29
Total of $110 to date,

Went down this morning to check on everything and noticed I have Aptasia. Tried to rip it out but it sucked back into a rock. Dang LFS, you buy 1/2 pound of live rock and you get Aptasia.

Using what you already have, many have had decent luck covering aiptasia with epoxy. Just make sure you seal it off completely.

Where were you when I was chasing the things all over my tank with joe's juice?
+1 to epoxy (stumbled upon this method on accident) or aptaisaX...epoxy is easier though.
Your daughter all excited about it?

I wanted to try epoxy but when I looked at it tonight just too many holes in the rock for it to come through so I just used aptaisaX seems like it worked well. No it's still a secret till Christmas morning thankfully she is young enough to not go snooping.
I know she will flip though. She knows all our fishes and crabs by name now and says good morning and goodnight to them already.
Sands in today will put it in later tonight and get some brighter pictures I'm thinking about putting my jbj nano glo on it to give it a little more light until I get some real LEDs from Evil.

Oct 20 2009, 08:02 PM
Added sand tonight and a spare JBJ Nano Glo I had floating around. Had to modify the AC20 as the intake stuck into the sand.
I decided I need two things tonight, better lighting and a better camera.

Decided to add a top to cut down on the top offs.
Bought some Lexan at Lowes today and did a quick job as their glass cutter was out of order.

Also got tired of the temporary LEDs I had in there and went with a temporary PC Coralife 50/50 20W bulb.

Here is some pictures of the top while its on the tank and the aquascape.

On a side note, I can't wait till Christmas so I can move this thing out of the basement and remove that ugly looking stealth heater thats right in the way.

for a tank so small, can't you use one of
those small heater pads?

Oct 24 2009, 11:15 PM
I have a Marineland 10W heater which is preset at 78 hiding in the back, however the tank is in my basement and it is in the high 50s down there right now and it just wasn't keeping up.

very nice rock work for such a tiny space. Looks very scaled and proportional.

That is a much better and far more attractive use for those little boxes than a betta!

that's a sweet setup! is it possible to get a smaller heater to put in the hob filter?
malibumowry
Oct 25 2009, 01:33 PM
Yes the 10W Marineland filter would fit in the AC20 if I modded the AC20. I don't think I am going to mod it though. The 10W will hide behind the rock really well and the cover will fit over it as well. That big black stealth is coming out as soon as the tank is moved out of the cold basement.

Looks great. I had a bettacube with just a 10w Coralife bulb and was able to keep various leathers, zoas, mushrooms, etc. I had just put it in a desk lamp and it was fine, so you may not need anything fancier than what you've got unless you feel like it.

I am now rocking the Pico Aquarium Club sig. Although I don't have one of cdelicath's nice tanks, I am getting some lighting from him.
I can't give a review on his work yet, but I would like to give him a great review on willing to work with me and modify his lighting to be exactly what I want. I am sometimes painful in what I want so I'm sure I wasn't the easiest customer.
Thanks cdelicath
Stay tuned for the new lighting in the coming weeks.
Now an update on the tank.
Removed a fireworm yesterday, about 3 inches in length, you can imagine in a 6x6 tank that it was quite big. Added 3 stomatella snails to the tank, recevied from some people at a local club for free.

Removed another fire worm a few days ago. Left in a few small regular bristle worms that I saw. Hopefully they don't get to big for the tank.
Added some zoas, pink with white tips. Will be adding a few SPS shortly once my custom LED lighting courtesy of cdelicath arrives

Pictures to follow Wednesday or Thursday of the new setup

Don't forget to acclimate!!!!
The light you are getting is very intense and will likely kill everything in there if you don't start low.
I would start by adjusting the color to the setting you like and then dim to below 50% and move it up for the next few months until you get to full power.
I don't run mine at full power at all, I run 50% all the time to keep my zoo's open and large.

I promise I won't kill everything

Yes definitely bright enough for this 1G tank. I don't know what you are planning on using it for but it worked pretty good for me in this application

I do have a smaller heater in there that is hidden behind the rocks, however since it is in my basement until Christmas the larger one is staying in there, especially since it is 55 in my basement right now and the other heater can't keep up.

Yes I'm quite happy with how this tank is turning out. All the frags have been excellent quality. They have all cost me $10 per frag, (love my local fragger). And all of the frags seem to be loving the tank. I moved the monti cap up to the top of the tank to hopefully grow out towards the front of the tank so I can put another frag on the ledge where it use to be.
