I have been running my Nano for 2 years now and really fancy a Maxima Clam. Can I realistically keep one under fluorecent lighting.
Thanks

At the moment I have standard white and marine blue I think they are T8's. I will replace them if required. Are T5's suitable or is it more complicated than that.
Thanks

get T5's much higher light output compared to PC's

Yeah, T8's are junk. Go for T5HO (high output). Not sure if the fixture will support different bulbs though..

Cool, thanks. I will look for the bulbs this weekend.

You will need to retro-fit the tombstones and ballast for T5HO's to fire in that fixture.

I have a Maxima clam in my 15G under 4 x 24W T5HO. It's doing great. But like the other said, you'll have to do a little more fabrication than just chucking some new bulbs in your fixture.

Installed T5HO kit and It has made a great deal of difference to the appearance of the tank. I wish I had done it a long time ago. I am sure my clam is happier now.
Thanks for the advice.

so you already bought the clam without knowing wether it would survive under your lighting coditions???
very careless and extremely irresponsible dude.....ask the question BEFORE you go buy something that you're not sure will live.......

It was a very good deal and I had always intended on getting one. I had always intended on upgrading the lighting for corals etc. This just accelerated the install. For the week I had him before the light upgrade I had lots of direct sunlight, not hot as the weather is crap over here at the moment, to make up for the crap lighting I had.
I know, It's know excuse. I have been a naughty boy and consider my wrist slapped. I do usually put a lot of thought and investigation into these things.

Just a photo of the Clam, apologies for the poor quality. It's difficult to capture the real colour of these clams. I am not a great photographer.

Sorry to hijack the thread... but I didn't want to start a new one when this already deals with what I want to ask. 40w of T5-HO over a 7g tank.... sufficient for a tridacna clam? (20w 10000k, 20w 460nm actinic)
Edit: should have also mentioned: I'm leaning towards squamosa... but am still interested in maxima.

i'm going to pretend you didn't say that b/c you're new and just tell you that PC's bulbs are fast becoming a dead technology (for saltwater anyway, they're still fairly useful in freshwater aquariums) because of the lack of light penetration through the water
T5's and up for clams....follow that and you will have happy clams
