I'd skip drilling the tank and setup an AquaClear fuge and hang an AquaC Remora skimmer on the back (with a Koralia nano for more flow). I'd also skip the retrofit hood and just get fixture that fits it.

Thanks seabass, would a remora fit on the 10g or the aquaclear? Ive read somewhere that the skimmer was too large or something for the tank. I really would like to have a skimmer, as i have an urchin pro on my other tank and really like it.

Bought a 96w quad pc retro kit for $30, installed it in 5min. Also installed 3x2 blue moon leds. Now that there is light over the tank, I can see how crappy the glass is on the tank. Ive tried scrubbing it, but its pretty bad, so ill just have to buy a new 10g.
I need filtration and flow now. The rack that holds the hood is dead center in the back of the tank, so Im not sure if I can fit an AC70 on there. I have 8" from the brace to the end of the tank, and dimeansions online say that the ac70 is 8.5" >: So I may have to do an ac50 for a fuge and such. Ill probably get a koralia 1 to add for flow.
Im going to paint the back blue, have a deeper sand bed on one end than the other (20lbs?), and very minimal rock in it.

Here are some pics of the lighting.

That looks great! I had one of those lights for awhile and they put out tons of light but are HOT! You did a great job retro'n it into that hood.

Nice build so far. Great job on the mod too. With those LEDs it will be like a full moon every night lol. I have 2 LEDs and they are bright enough... then again they are 2 inches above the water lol.

Thanks for the heads up on that, I may end up cutting some holes and installing a couple fans in the hood then.

Thank you. Yeah, the lights are probably ~20" above the tank, and I really wanted more blue lol.

My blues at night make the stuff look really wicked! I love the blue LEDs on my corals.

Hi! Thanks for the kind words, ill be working on dressing up the stand and canopy as the tank grows too.
I just may end up cutting out and modding the light arm to accomidate an ac110 or something, my DIY skills are probably on par with yourself. I cant wait to see how all these tanks turn out.

The hanging hood is kind of what makes the ugliness of the thing bearable for me, somehow it looks differently nice :/
And I hear ya on the PC lights, so many people will be having halide and LED, I was a little worried. But, I dont intend on keeping anything light intensive. In fact, I was also going to do a carribean biotope like yourself but I may have to change that up a little now lol.

Cool! I saw a setp just like that at Captain D's!
Looked cool though, and set up as a seahorse tank. The cook musta been a nano-reefer. tongue.gif

for the aquascape shots if you did'nt like the one you had PM me a new one
Kylebeano
Sorry about the aquascape thing. Never got the tank up and running...until today! Yay.

So the tank is back on track. Its rimless with black silicone, black sand, and one nice 5lb tonga rock. Still too murkey for any pictures, but when it clears up ill have them uploaded in a heart beat!
I can now save up for the livestock while it is cycling.
Kylebeano
Alright, got some pics!

Rim...less

One rock

Wall-E, I always seem to get one lonley hitchhiking cleaner.

The tank is pretty cold since we havnt been having the heat on (68*), I may end up getting a heater. I just hate how they look in tanks :/

Kylebeano
putting these in here today to later satisfy the16th's FTS.

I did a water change and siphoned out about 5lbs of algae, it was really bad. But, i have a healthy population of brittle stars, pods, worms, and such. Also, some pretty cool things are popping out of the rock.

Diskusting
that rock is awsome, this would make an awsome lagoon style setup. A BLACK LAGOON! lol
Kylebeano
haha thanks a lot. the rock is really neat, shaped like a hand and insanely porous. lots of life, especially vermatid snails.
SoCalDude
When are you going to get some fish and corals in here?
Kylebeano
I may just make this a macro tank. I finally got a job again, so ill probably be building a new tank in a few months after saving up and moving. I just can commit anything really worth it to the hobby right now. Ive done one water change on this tank lol. With this, I wont keep any corals or fish. But the new tank is going to be tight.
Jacobnano
FTS due today.
