Cool! Very clean, looks like somthing out of a Sharper Image catalog.

Now I need to work on the rock structure. IMO this will be the most critical phase to accomplish the Bonsai Garden effect and if not done properly will make the whole tank look bad. I want everything to seem in proportion when you examine the tank closely.

You sound like Amano. wink.gif

I guess it'll have to be a rubble-only scape. Something like a triad of rocks of different heights set to one side?

The real tough part is not packing stuff in there. That would be my greatest challenge. I would be tempted to fill it up all at once and it would never look right. sleep.gif

It is going to be tough. I have a bunch of small pieces of rubble I can work with but your right, it will be easy to overpower the thing. It will take some tinkering to get it right. I think this will be the hardest part of the whole tank design. The design of the mechanics and subsequent construction are easy - the aesthetics are much more challenging!

Zoa's is definately top of the list. I don't want any one thing overpowering the effect. Think Bonsai garden. I am trying to get my hands on some Blue Clove Polyps but my LFS is still cultivating them and is being stingy.
I have some GSP but it is very invasive and the flow may be a bit low for it.

Thank you Weetie. I am flattered! blush.gif

As usual Fosi nailed it and goes to the head of the class. It is simply rigid airline tubing. Nothing fancy. Bends were accomplished with a tubing bender and a heat gun.

Depending on how this plays out from a stability/longevity standpoint that would be my desired end game.

Now for some Pics!

Right now it is sitting on a project box I had laying around with the aqualifter underneath it while I build the stand that will hold it. I think I need to work on the overflow a bit but other than that it is done. The overflow tube has a piece of foam prefilter in it and actually is removable so I can handle a line clog if necessary. I also made plugs for the intake and return so I can isolate the pump for servicing or moving.

Now I need to work on the rock structure. IMO this will be the most critical phase to accomplish the Bonsai Garden effect and if not done properly will make the whole tank look bad. I want everything to seem in proportion when you examine the tank closely.

You say this is closed loop correct? Would you be able to put a small sump in the stand instead, say a 5g AGA, but place the return pump fairly high in it so it won't overfill the display? You could make the 5 a heck of a refugium, and perhaps put a few pounds of LR/LS in of course, would make keeping such a micro-reef easier. Just thinking out loud here. smile.gif Either way this is gonna be an awesome tank, I'm gonna follow this thread.

Edit: NM, re-read 1st post stating you intend to use an Aqualifter. Just curious, but what sort of flow do those thing put out? I don't own one, and have never seen one in action. Its not a "dribble" is it?
Professor
^^^^Thanks for all of the compliments guys.

It is indeed a closed loop. The flow from the aqualifter is 3.5 gph at 0 head. Not a alot but I am hoping I can get by. I see where you are going with your idea but it will kill the clean lines I am going for and look very out of proportion. I may investigate something similar in the future but for now I am going to stick with the aqualifter and see how it goes. I actually had the idea of building a wall shelf for it to sit on and plumbing it into the sump for my 40 breeder!

I like this clean looking little thing, nice work. So how's it coming along? Add anything?

Tank's looking awesome! biggrin.gif
you should run it thru a 10g sump... tongue.gif

you're the professer and i am sure you will figure it out!

Maybe a second Aqualifter pump would be worthwhile?

UPDATE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

now that you've seen the PAR38 over mine and a few others' tanks, I'm not sure you can resist it.

Haven't added anything yet. Still trying to find the time to build the box for it to sit on. Maybe this weekend I can work on it. I almost scrapped this project but I think I am going to go ahead and see wha ti can do with it.

I thought about that but it will add extra bulk to the design. I hear tell there was a 5gph aqualifter pump at one time, but I can't seem to find one.

Dude that is so freakin' sweet on your tank. Evil does an unbelievable job on those things I think I have to get one of those no matter what. If I can't use it for this I can figure out something to do with it I am sure!

NOt as great as I would imagine, although it is hard to tell with nothing in the tank. I will know better once I start stocking the tank.

It really got me chuckling because So. Maryland is loaded with Amish communities. Probably second only to Lancaster PA on the east coast. I deal with one who runs a mill where I get some of my timber for carving and turning who is a great guy.

+1 on the update... awaiting more photos....
Professor
I am sorry to say that I am shelving this little project for now, probably until the spring. I appreciate everyone following this and all the inputs. I have another project that I want to get done first and want to focus my resources (both time and cash) on it. I hope it will be worthy.

Look for a new thread on the next project soon!!!! Thanks again. The micro reef will be back at a later date!

Not everyone feels that way wink.gif

And I have PLENTY of Pico tanks less than 2 gallons that I have had running for much longer than you may have had your larger tank for also wink.gif

Don't speak for everyone... but pico's just aren't for everybody.... the ones that stick with it can make it work... I have the proof. smile.gif
