So I got an emerald crab today and just acclimatied him. While he was in the bag he was on his back like it was playing dead. Drip acclimatied him for about 30 mins and put him in the tank.

I flippied him over and he keeps flipping himself over on to his back. He barley moves and when he was moving he was staggering. Is he not long for this world or is he just trying to molt. Going to give him a day and see what happens, any help welcome.
Codeman
Probably getting ready to molt.
tennowataru
I can only hope. He currentlys on his back flaying about every few seconds right now. Keeping a close eye on him.

I had 2 emerald crabs they are good for a month till they eat all the alage then eat your corals eat my aussie duncan, frogspawn, hammer etc. be carefull and keep an eye on him alot of people on here have bad problems with them but they do a god job cleaning up hope the little guy gets better good luck

Well I don't think he going to make it. He's splayed out on his back not moving at all. His leg twitches a little every once and a while. I'll give him to tommorow morning till flush time.
JanVa
Didn't you bring him home this way from the LFS? I'd call them and let them know what's going on.
Sorry this is happening. It always sucks when we lose even the littlest critter in this hobby.

No he was fiesty, when I got hom he was on his back like he was dead. And we don't have guraantes on inverts at the fish store I work at. Too many variables to work with since invert are so sensitve. His not a big loss so I can get a replacement easily.

I know it not my parameters as the cleaner shrimp and snails acculimatied the same day are doing peachy. He must of gotten a little too stress out. Damn you Eli Manning(emerald crab's name)!!! mad.gif
tennowataru
Well it look like he kicked the bucket. Its no longer moving and prodding it does nothing.

when did you notice it start to go downhill? you might have rushed the acclimation. or it could have just been a one-off death where who knows what went wrong.
bluefunelement
I'll trade you my live one for your dead one- I now dread coming home to see what he's knocked into what today- luckily today he only knocked a zoa colony ontop of my 2 blue rics with no damage done - but he was squating where the zoa used to be just mocking me...

Good news - I bought a live rock for $10 and it came with 2 tiny hitchikers - porcelain and a pom pom crab! I won't miss the emerald.
ajmckay
A porcelain and a pom pom as hitchhikers?!? Dang you scored like hardcore... That's like $40 of free stuff.

Anyways, sucks about the emerald. I've never had good luck with them either if it's any constellation. My first one ate all the algae in my 29g and must have died of starvation. The second one I fed supplemental foods to, however it mysteriously died as well... No more emerald crabs for me. Not like they do anything better than my hermits, and at least they don't cause any trouble.

Nope, didn't rush it. He was already on his back when I got home. Thought he was playing dead. Floated bag in water for 15min then did a drip acculimation for 30 min. He was always on his back during the drip mad.gif . Writing it off as who know what happen.

Was planning to keep this guy for just a bit as I have just finish my cycle a couple days ago. I'll probably get another one tommorow when I go to work. Hopefully that one does well biggrin.gif .

drip acclimation might a bad idea? i read this from Reefcleaners.org....please correct me ..i m not even sure

1. Float the bag in your tank to get the snail used to the temperature in your aquarium.

2. Wait 15 minutes.

3. Add contents to tank.

Important: Snails may go through shock during shipping, and be closed when they arrive. You should give them plenty of time to come out of their shells and move around before deciding they didn't make the trip. Ceriths may go dormant for up to 3 days.

You may find this to be different than the acclimation procedure you are used to carrying out. The reason we now ask our customers to use this procedure is because our snails and crabs live intertidally, and can handle swings in ph/salinity without a problem. However, what they can't handle is toxic levels of ammonia. During the shipping process, ammonia levels in the shipping bags build, while the ph level goes down. As the ph goes down the toxicity of ammonia also goes down. However, when your tank water with normal ph is introduced to the shipping bags, and the ph rises, so does the toxicity of the ammonia, and you will be poisoning the livestock. Please don't do this. Any other method of acclimation voids the Alive Arrival Guarantee.

That really only applies to inverts that are shipped. He bought his locally.

that doesn't apply for our emerald crabs though, only hermit crabs that are "dry packed". As a rule of thumb, don't use one source's acclimation guidelines for another source, and especially, (as marteen said), shipped animals do not get the same treatment as locally purchased. (But even in this case we would suggest drip acclimating the emeralds). I would temperature acclimate and drip everything locally purchased.
