After the great response to the initial batch of PAR38 lamps, we are expanding our color options. Keeping with the same vein of Japanese lighting styles, we have added two solid color lamps to the lineup; and all royal blue for the best actinic supplimentation, and all red, for enhancing red, pink, and purple colors in the reef. Another addition is a lamp combining 2 blue, 2 white, and 1 red LED for a look similar to a Radium 20K MH lamp.

There will be an additional 1 week lead time for these color options, and an $8.95 surcharge. Please visit the site for more details on these lamps.

"Not designed for use with a dimmer"

Why not? What would the potential side effects be?

LOL - long time no talk Chris - things have changed a lot! I remember the old school Via Aqua days, and halides are a thing of the past now tongue.gif

Any pics of these new color configs? I'm most intrigued by the W/B/R combination.

It may yeild some undesireable results, including killing the lamp. These are not to be used with dimmers, unless I hear differently from the manufacturer. Until that point, we will not hold up any kind of warranty if used with a dimmer.

I'll try and get some pictures of them soon.

Don't believe everything you read. It's very unlikely that those lamps really run up to 36W. I have a PAR30 lamp running at 12W with 5 LEDs with the exact same heatsink design (you can see it in my Pico Lamp thread, about post 220), that gets a little toasty at 12W. Granted, the PAR38 is larger, but it's still not going to handle 36W. Not a chance.

So it's the manufacturers fault. Good to hear. When I read that the first time I thought you might be taking short cuts. ohmy.gif My bad.

So what you're saying is that even though the leds are 3 watts, the heatsink is insufficient to run at full capacity? So when will you develop yours??? wub.gif

What I was getting at more was that some vendors make exagerated claims as far as the power consumption of these lamps. Every one that I have tested so far has measured lower than advertized. Even the one that we are using now (although it's the closest so far). I'm very sceptical of that lamp running at 24W or 36W. The LED life will certainly not be 60,000 hours.

As far as us doing a more powerful lamp, it will be up to what we can find, or make. As I'm sure some of you already know, I try to get the best quality parts for you guys. smile.gif

Evil,

Would a couple of these (let's say around 4-5) in a 48in long shallow tank (16in water) be good for an SPS tank with clams on the sandbed? How would it compare to a 6x54w T5HO fixture?

K thanks for the explanation Evil, and thanks for all your hard work. Good chance I'll be buying around Decemberish.

It's going to depend on how you want to light the tank. You have to think differently if you want to use as few of these lamps as possible to save some coin. If you want full coverage on the tank, you will need 6 or 7 lamps over a 48" long tank.

Hey Evil, I currently have one of the 20K PAR38 bulb and would like to add a single red LED to the tank...best option to do so? Swap one of the LEDs out myself, or add a single stand alone red LED with the current bulb? If the latter, can you recommend a good ready to go option for a single red LED?

I'm curious about the red LEDs as well. Since I have a 9 LED setup for my pico, I have 5 blues and 4 whites. Switching the middle blue out to red to bring out those colors would be pretty nice.

Changing the LED isn't easy. Adding something like a PAR16 red LED lamp might be easier.

For your DIY fixture, just find a red LED on a star and swap it out. I think LED Supply still has stock on them.

For adding a touch of color, that could work well.

New batch of 12K and 20K lamps will be back in stock end of next week. We have a few backorders to fill, but we have 100 of each coming in. The new color temps will be following shortly behind them.

Well I would have to recommend not dealing with this one...2 weeks, no response to emails or calls. Sigh...at least it was only a few bucks.

What exactly does the PAR38 value on the bulbs mean, and is it a useful number for comparison? Higher PAR number, brighter light, or what?
evilc66
It's a reference of a commerical lighting standard. PAR stands for Parabolic Aluminized Reflector. The number works just like fluorescent lights, with the number being 1/8" increments. So a PAR38 would be 4.75" in diameter. These LED lamps keep the PAR naming just because they are designed to be replacements for lamps that would fit in PAR38 fixtures, even though they don't have an aluminized reflector.

Whoa, yes, sorry for any confusion at all. I was talking about the non-response from the seller of the ebay red LED bulb.

I am super happy with the PAR38 bulbs, customer service, and advice and info from nanotuners/nanocustoms.com. biggrin.gif

Thanks Chris.
