Full Version: 60 Second Frag Rack [Kid Proof]

Bonsai
Hi all.

I've wanted a frag rack in my BioCube 29G for quite some time, specifically, I wanted a Mag-Rack in my BC29. The issue, I found, with owning a magnetic frag rack is that children tend to pick the magnets off the glass from the outside - thus causing the rack to fall. My kids are obsessed with my Mag-Float, so I knew that I had to come up with something else.

Material

- Black Egg Crate Scrap
- 2 x Stealth Heater Holders (see pic below)
- 4 x Black Zip Ties

Simply place the Stealth Heater Holders (these already have suction cups attached to them) on the bottom of the Egg Crate and zip tie. Now I have a frag rack that I can mount in my BC29, without having to worry about it falling due to the kiddos pulling off the exterior magnets.

Finished Rack, shown suction-cupped to the outside of my BioCube 8 in my office

cool idea, but it will suck when those suction cups fail while you're gone and dump your frags upside down in the sand.

or when they fall on another coral that costed bookoo bucks, in turn, killing it. gluck w/ suction cups. you can cut corners but be prepared to take some lumps when it doesn't work out.

30 dollar frag rack that holds or frags that could amount to several hundreds.. *ponders*

You guys are missing the point ... I CAN'T use magnetic racks because of the kids. This is the only alternative I could think of wink.gif

Very nice thinking bud! Some suction cups are stronger than other, but if it holds, then BRAVO!!! biggrin.gif

It sure beats he heck out of your kids playing around with potentially dangerous magnets. Last thing you want is to find one of those things missing. Good thinking Bonsai biggrin.gif

Let me know if you ever want those plastic coated inner magnets, I'll set something up for you.

Those stealth suction cups are pretty good. My heater never has came lose in 5 months.

I used to use the same thing, but I used 4 cups on a tiny rack. It never once came off.

Maybe I'll add a third to the center for more support.

Thanks for the input everyone!

oorrr you could, even thought the move light the more growth in some cases, simply keep the frag rack about a 1" or 3" off from the floor that way if it were to fall over or tip. everything wouldn't land upside down and they would all just be diagnal and tilted.

Isn't that the truth.

I found two more of the Stealth Heater Holders sitting around, so I'm going to add two more suction cups just for piece-of-mind. smile.gif

Ya I would put as many as yo can haha.

i read the post. his desire to avoid magnets does not refute the crappy quality of mass produced aquarium suction cups.

But if he used magnets his frag rack would fail 100% because the kids would pull the magnets off. If he uses suction cups there is at least a chance it won't fail especially if he checks them during his weekly maintenance routines.

Kid-proof Magnets. (bodybuilders need not look)

Super spendy, but I've seen one of these being used, ripped coralline right off the glass, once the guy got the magnet moving, took both hands and theres no way you can just pull it off, gotta slide it to an edge and maneuver it off. If any kid under say, 14 or 15 years old can remove this, they ate too MUCH Wheaties.

A nice alternative is to add epoxy coated magnets to this build. That way when the kids pluck off the magnets the suction cups hold it on, and if the suction cups fail hopefully the kids have put the magnets back on by then smile.gif

Boom. I added two more of the Stealth Heater Holders to this bad boy. It is flippin' ridiculously secure now.

I officially deem this Bonsai's 120 Second Kid-Proof Frag Rack ™.

had the same problem with my magnetic POS rack . whats this daddy? built this one, it just hangs on the side. i have a larger one on the other side. urs looks like it will be fine as long as you check it often and dont put uber large frags on it

asting
I second the adding a mag-float as a backup.
Also, biggest frags closest to the side, smaller further away (torque).

I have heard the same complaint about the vortech and it not being [Adult Proof].

smile.gif Glad I could help. With four of the Stealth Heater Holder suction cups, this thing is solid! I'll still check it weekly with water changes, but I'm confident.
Trolldoll
You could you put a drop or two of superglue on your magnets.

I'm making one like yours tomorrow and hopefully its Urchin proof.

scooter you could drill and use plastic set screws under the lip.

That's actually not a bad idea! Superglue the magnets to the outside of the glass.

I moved my frag rack today, because I needed to clean the glass around it with my Mag Float ... it was a pain in the ass to move! Those suction cups are crazy strong - I have zero fear of it ever falling off.
