I've been having a bunch of hair growth over the past few weeks. And I was wondering would a 3 month old bag of carbon sitting in the bottom of a media rack possibly be the problem?

I don't think regular carbon is supposed to be used for more than a week or two at a time. I'd pull it out. Chemi-Pure on the other hand lasts a few months...

I did pull it out I'm till running the bag of chemi-pure. this hair algae is getting old. think a few pieces of my live rock had some on them when I bought them but I figured it would have died off. I'm running a refug which doesn't seem to be doing much good.. Everything s doing good in the tank to the point I'm seeing growth so maybe in time the tank will level itself out with my weelkly water changes...

How old is your tank? Your CUC should be able to take care of the algae.

Hair algae is not caused by carbon/chemi pure. Have you tested for phosphates?

Couldn't the carbon be leaching phosphates if it's kept for too long? That's what I meant. It's been in his tank for 3 months.

The carbon could be harbouring all kinds of bacteria. Meaning your carbon bag is a dirty Nitrate hotel.
Chances are, the carbon was spent in the first month, assuming you've had it since you started the tank. Why not just take it out?
