I have what appears to be a quarter-sized pink sponge that is encrusting a piece of LR in my sump fuge. the LFS identified it as coralline algae, but I do not think this is correct -- it's soft/squishy/slimy-feeling, and it has almost a tissuey/fleshy appearance.

anyway, assuming it is a sponge (what else could it be?), i random aiptasia has shown up directly next to it. i have a peppermint shrimp in my display tank to control aiptasia, but it can't do anything about aiptasia in the sump fuge.

my question is, will the aiptasia sting the sponge in a way that is going to kill it (thus cause a problem for the rest of my tank)?

Sponges should feel "spongy" and not slimy or slippery (think of a natural dried sponge). Aiptasia won't harm true sponges.

hmm.. maybe i should post on the id forum, then!

thanks for the reply.

Try to ask a moderator to move your thread to the ID forum for you, so other people (and you) don't get mixed up about who answered what/where.
