Full Version: Breaking the rules

So, I was reading another thread here and I got to thinking: we photogs are always touting that rules and order are needed to create good photography, and in this hobby rules abound - the rule of thirds, triangles/diagonals, level horizons, placing the light source behind you, 'sunny 16' (does anyone still use that? lol), and on and on. But some of my favorite photographs - not my best, per se, just my favorites - have been the results of broken rules.

Here's a couple of my rule-breakers, now let's see yours. smile.gif

But it's also important to state that in order to break the rules, you must learn them first. wink.gif

Where do I learn these "rules"? The pictures on my phone rarely turn out very well.

hmm, true. to expand on that, while one 'rule' was broken in both of my photographs, that broken rule served to accentuate others - the rule of thirds in the first, and the leading lines in the second.

know your rules before you break them, people. also, lani needs to post some rule-breakers since she's the expert. wink.gif

Hey now, I never claimed to be an expert. tongue.gif

It's more of a general disregard for the rules, lol.. as in I really don't think about the rules while I'm taking pics.. I just take them in a way that it looks pleasant to me. I'll see what I can come up with.

I took newspaper photography in college and the only rule I learned or was taught was "GET THE PICTURE!" which doesn't win you pulitzers but does add about a thousand words to your story. laugh.gif
That rule kinda sucks for real photography though. Except occasionally.
Visibility was crap, current was spiffy, a sudden shadow overhead and I fired this off and was fortunate to get it. Not compositionally great but I did get the picture.

Get the picture. I like it. That's my little brothers philosophy. He's 11 and loves taking pictures. He doesn't have the patience to learn much yet so I'm slowly trying to guide him in the right direction.

Here are a bunch of his shots from our last race:

My favorites (I cropped them for him):
