Full Version: Macro Algae Question

I was wondering. Since macro algae seems to bring down nitrates. Is there a macro algae I could put in a 6 gallon nano with a few Zoa and a Yellow Tail Damsel that wouldnt take over the tank? Or atleast be manageable trimming wise to put in? Dont have/cant afford a fuge of any kind right now so im hoping for something that wouldnt take over what little tank space I have.

Tank specs just in case:
Bad lighting. Upgrading VERY soon the current 28W 2700K is just to keep the LR alive.
6 Physical gallons of water
8 lbs of rock 3 live 5 base
Flat back hex kind of thing.
5 Lbs of live sand

Thats about it currently

the best macro ive used is chaeto but if its going into your display a ball of chaeto would look funny. you can go to reefcleaners.org i think thats the best place to get macro and they have a big selection.

You could look into some of the calciferous algaes like sea fans, shaving brushes, halimeda, flame algae...Also, halymenia is a pretty one. They use calcium to grow but also consume nitrates (less so than chaeto, though). Another option is to put some mangroves in the tank.

Edit: Halymenia isn't calciferous.

Totally agreed.
They have a good selection of really nice Macro's, with good descriptions of each on the site, including growth rate, etc.
You should be able to find something that would suit your needs perfectly.
You could also PM johnmaloney (owner of ReefCleaners) and get his input.

Out of all the macros I have in my display I really enjoy my Fire Fern the best.
