Sure, why not? And it's a good place to put all those hh crabs that might otherwise cause some problems (eating algae, kids, souls...).

i overheard a guy at my lfs talking about how his emerald crab ate all of his cheato

I keep hermits and as stated above, the hitchhiker crabs in there....that area collects detritus too, due to being a relative low flow area more settling occurs there, and thus needs a bit of servicing as well
dude at the LFS must have had either one MONSTER emerald crab, or a little tiny chaeto ball, IMO.....

i dont really understand the hatred towards lfs,
and the guy was buying more cheato which is kinda evidence that its true, also he didnt work there
it would be kinda neat to have a little crab harvest your cheato for you , although by eating it he is reintroducing nutrients back into the tank. although im sure some amount of it will go into his growth

This is so true. All my LFS are run by people who just want my money. they trick anyone into buying things that are too expensive and unnecessary. Live rock being $15 a lbs?? no.

Try to avoid adding CUC animals that defeat the purpose of a refugium: to be a refuge for things that would be eaten in the display tank.

Or you can stick the predators in there and watch them duke it out

i keep a few saltwater glass shrimp in my fuge. they'll eat the detritus and a few pods but they also breed and in turn feed the display tank.

Are glass shrimps the same as mysis? Where can I get them?

thanks you all! keep it coming I just need something to keep up with cyno & detritus build up. I have tried to get rid of the cyno by adding more flow but it hasn't helped.. the only place i get it is in the fuge.

Seems like pods would be enough in your refugium. Laks has a good point, its a "refuge".

snails shouldn't hurt though since they dont consume pods or chaeto

I have 1 unidentified crab, 4 snails, and 2 pencil urchins in my fuge. Additionally there is a ginormous ball of chaeto and thousands of pods...
I forgot to mention there is also an unidentified anemone that protrudes from a small hole in a hermit crab shell in my fuge as well...

I know that i would not put an emerald crab with chaeto, i had mine in my fuge for awhile and he shredded chaeto like no tomorrow and i had bits of it flying all over the display all the time, It was horribly annoying.

I've got the same problem, lmk if you figure out to get rid of it..still wondering if you can add CUC in refuge.

Its been a couple months since.
I let it be and it cleared up on its own. I was figuring that since it was a add on to the main tank it would not have a problem w/ that.. it settled out on it own.

i would only add a cuc to a refugium if it was visible, or meant to look nice, or if cyano growth was choking out chaeto, or other refugium media. not necessary otherwise....nuisance algae filters water too.

I always put 1 astrea snail in my fuges... it helps clean up the glass a bit and also some stuff on the rocks.

+1 snails help keep the walls clean and hermits help trim down the overgrowth. At least thats what mine do. They also add waste that the pods readily feed on which in turn my fish feed on the excess pods...Another mini ecosystem
