Hi, I've just upgraded my 5G to a 19G a week ago, and I want to modify a filter into a refugium for it smile.gif

My tank dimensions are: 30" x 12" x 12"

Inhabitants:
1 Yellowtail Damsel
1 Bicolour pseudochromis
1 Orange Spotted Shrimp Goby
1 Longfin Fairy Wrasse
1 False Percula
1 Fire Shrimp
1 Red-Striped Hermit Crab
+ some crabs and a snail.

Corals:
Soft corals and zoanthids

Which filter do you think I should get? Aquaclear 70 or 110?

Thanks in advance!

the bigger the better. just keep in mind the ac110 is going to move a lot of water!

I want to do the same for my 10 gallon, and have seen people put the AC110 on a 10g nano. Looked like they had success from the pictures i saw. It was probably a bit big for a 10g, but would be fine for a 19.

Bigger is better.....couldn't hurt to have that much more water volume, and depending on what you want in your tank i'm sure that extra flow would help as well. Good luck.

By the way have you came across any ideas for a penguin HOB filter mini-fuge mod???

Yeah...if the flow is too much, there are threads about trading out and/or trimming the impeller to reduce the water flow. I'd go w/ the largest and reduce the flow if you have to...larger is definitely better.

Penguin hob would be fine too. You can make them out of any filter really. Aquaclears work nicely though because you can use the media basket to make baffles and a grate to prevent your algae and what not from getting into your tank.

i like the 110 more because the return area is much wider, making for a dispersed flow. I originally used a 70 but it created a crater in the sand. The 110 in the same tank didnt.

Go bigga! Both of those are a bit small for a 20L but will be better than nothing that's for sure.

The AC110 uses its own impeller, no others swap out with it, so it'd have to be altered in some way. But larger is always better. I've heard the AC110 holds about a gallon of water.

I measured them all last night and they hold approx

AC50 = .35 gallons
AC70 = .75
AC110 = 1.25 gallons
