wow! thanks for the link. That guy knows what he is doing! That was very similiar to what I have in mind. I will most likely get onsey and twoseys rather than his idea of TONS.
Like all of us, the hardest part of this hobby is easily the waiting part. I just want to throw everything in NOW and have it grow in 2 days!!!!

Couple more pictures....

I took these two with an old flash light to spot light the crab. I liked the yellow orange color of the bulb to give contrast to the rich green and "blueish" water reflecting from the halides.

This was a crab eating squid.

This was taken tonight. I love when the crabs go in this little hole. They do alot as the rock absorbs some of the water and therefore is always wet. Crab heaven!

Great looking tank, very unique. Are the drip lines from the volcano the only return for water, or do you have a return buried under the rocks that helps with flow in your tank? I am just wondering about flow for the SPS corals you are planning.

If you check out the photos, you'll see the returns coming from behind the 'volcano'.

You have done an AMAZING job!!
However, I agree with some of the other people, an ultrasonic fogger would look even better. Just picture waves of fog falling down the volcano. I doubt anyone would be able to top that.
Great work and good luck!!

I had originally planned a small spot light type light from the ceiling to light the tip of the Volcano and the mangroves, but they are actually continuing to sprout without that light, so the ambient light must be enough.
I found it odd too.....
We'll see I guess!

Totally! I spent countless hours looking at all kinds of lights. I went to specialty lighting stores, Home Depot, OSH, you name it. Here's what I decided on coming up with....
.....by placing a light(s), it would crowd the ceiling. So, between the two halides pendants that are black, I would have to install something in between, albeit small, but it would appear cluttered. I really wanted a small spot light kinda like a lamp you would use to illuminate a painting. I decided against it due to the "clutter" reason, lack of easy options, and started to dig the "dark top" look.
So, to the simple answer is "uh, YEAH!"

One of my first "species" tanks was a Mantis Tank. I was very very close to doing that again in this tank, but didn't want to deal with the rubble. These crabs leave enough mess with the snail shells and chiton shells, and the mantis shrimps are usually a bit less tidy than that!
I love the "uniqueness" that this hobby allows, and though a spectacular reef that is flourishing, beautiful, and BIG is awesome, there is something that pulls me stronger to the unusual and different....
Thanks for the kind words!
A mantis tank was my first species tank as well. They can be a bit messy, but I think it keeps things interesting.

I agree, the unusual aspects of reefkeeping are far more alluring to me than larger reefs. My favorite tank, aside from the mantis, was a 1.25g pico just because it allowed me to focus on all the minute aspects of a reef environment.
Keep up the good work.
