I'm building a pico (fresh water) to go next to my 3 gal pico reef.
i haven't decided on a filter yet, i want to build a canister filter cuz i have pumps laying around so it will be cheap $10-20. or i might make a All in one but i don't want it to look ugly..
Any ideas? if you have made one please post a picture thanks.

I built one, and it's a pain in the ass. It's not so bad if you have it at the same level as the tank, but if you want it under the desk/stand, then you have to deal with head pressures and trying to seal the container better.

but with shiping it will be like $35, inm trying to go really cheap cuz im a teen reefer and i have 3 reef tanks as it is.
it is going right behind the tank.
what if i drill it or make a small over flow would that be easyer? any ideas?

You are going to spend almost $35 on parts alone to get it working, and it could just leave you with a mess on your desk. Just go with a small manufactured canister filter for safety.

Not going to argue with you there. Sometimes it can be a major pain though.

yea you can say twice lol i love inventing stuff or make things work another way. im stuck at home (sick) so i make stuff like i just made a pvc overflow for a pico it just has a slow flow rate like 30-40 gph.

iv seen alot of people have canister filters on there reefs, yes they can cause nitraits but its ether the "poop" rots in there where you can take it out.. or in your tank.. and if you didnt see this is for a fresh water pico and its just for fun

it would be easier(cheaper) to make a sump/fuge than it would be to take the time to seal a plastic container to make a canister
