My bro has one, I am pretty sure they only eat coraline, hence the color.

some eat coralline algae, some eat only fleshier algae...it depends. having a chiton is like having a snail, species matters etc... usually if they have purple or pink coloring the eat coralline, their color is camoflauge. It is cool though and coralline grows fast, so I would keep it.

i guess it just depends then how much you value coralline. i wouldn't mind losing some coralline for that guy, cool looking critter. here is another cool looking chiton:

as far as identifying your species..what color is the foot? what scale are we looking at? do you believe this chiton to be mature?

yeah I agree your chiton > than coralline. I had a book on them somewhere, but I couldn't find it....will keep looking though. I have a storage space filled with books in boxes and I should have removed all the field guides but it was a long moving day and well...at least they didn't end up at the curb at that point!

A lot of the cooler looking chitons are temperate or arctic, not saying yours is (mnherper), but that is what is going on with a lot of them.

- mnherper - ok so I found the field guide to chitons in florida and some locations in the west indies. yours isnt from there, or if it is, it would have to be extremely rare, it is a pretty good field guide. (well I looke dintwo actually, and it wasn't in either). pacific species probably. that book i am afraid is probably lost to storage, but maybe narrowing the range will/may help you out.
