Hi guys, got an awesome deal on a tyree war coral that a friend was selling for a while. Red with green eyes. Anyway I cant find much info on propagating this coral, hell theres not much info on it at all. In the 2 months or so Ive had it, it has totally covered the small frag disc and is spreading on my sand. Should I just be cutting around the eyes?> Or like acans does it not matter? Once I get a few decent cuts they will be for sale. You can see it in the rear of the pic behind the acan.

I haven't fragged this one before, but I suspect it's similar to an Acan.
I'd try to cut between the eyes where possible, and where it's not possible just cut and don't worry about it.
Wouldn't hurt to give it an iodine dip after fragging.
I like to do:
1 cup tankwater
1 drop lugol's iodine
3 mins

Thanks, Ill try that. Id prefer to do it right the first time so waiting to find more info on them. I guess the Wars are considered chalices?

i have a multicolored one that i bought thats red and green, it seems to me that they had a big one and cut it into squares regardless of where the mouths were but one of the mouths that were cut in half seems to be growing faster than the rest and is kinda bulging out now

Thanks, Im guessing just a scalpel will do it?

Nope, you're going to at the very least need a dremel with a diamond saw blade, if you can get your hands on a wet bandsaw that would work much better though. A scalpel isn't going to cut through the skeleton, those are for soft corals, the species of this one is a Favites pentagona.

Thanks, just picked one up recently. I was thinking this was more of a soft coral, thats why I figured the scalpel would work. Since the dremels gotta be involved, Ill probably wait a little longer until it grows out some more. Does anyone know how to tell if its an actual war coral?
MitchReef
I dunno how to tell if it's a "real" war coral, besides by lineage, but who cares....

and BTW...I want a frag....where are you located?
Audi0s
North nj like ten min from NYC. Ever get up here?
mnherper
its a war coral there no way of telling if its a Tyree or not.

Maybe I can send a piece out and get its DNA tested lol
