Ive been wondering about this for a while now, should i be removing chaeto when my sump is full of it in order for nutrients to be absorbed?
I mean, when the sump is full and the chaeto can no longer grow, does it still absorb nutrients? If no then I suspect i should remove some to keep the biological filtration process going?
I'm not sure how chaeto removes nutrients other than growing out?
Can someone shed some light here?
Thanks!

When chaeto grows it absorbs nutrients. If your not taking it out regularly you are defeating the purpose of having it in the first place.

I usually just wait until it fills up about 1/2 the space it's in and then remove 1/2.

Seriously though remove some on occasion and make sure you turn over the colony from time to time and rinse it out to remove any trapped detritus(preferably in old tank water during water change).
