So, I'm running a 60g tank that I transfered my 36g reef into and it has a 6g sump with cheato, live rock, and a protein skimmer.

I was just wondering how to figure out in this case how many fish I can max out at since this is alot bigger than my old 12g nano.

Thanks

It really depends on the type and size of the fish. You could put 20 neon gobies in there, but you couldn't put in 20 tangs. Come up with a good concept for it and show us the list.

What are the dimensions? Will this be a reef or FOWLR?

It's a reef, it is 4 foot long and 2 foot tall and 13" deep. I already have 2 clowns a yellow watchman and a coral beauty angel. I would like to get a few bigger fish like a tang (maybe might still be too small) perhaps some anthias, a copperhead butterfly.

6 medium fish MAX. oh and that doesnt include tangs. wink.gif
also, your probably wanna get a bigger sump. a 6g fuge would be good but 6g total sump is too small for your size tank.

well, it's 12g total but I only have it about 6 or 7g full. I built it for my old 36 and it works fine so I won't be making another one. Too much time and money since schools starting soon. I've got lots of cheato and light in this one and it seems to be running fine.

Besides, i've seen people running no sump so somethings better than nothing.

i believe you can add in about 3 anthias OR 1 tang OR 1 copperbrand and 2 small fishes.

Are copperbands reefsafe? Anything to watch out for?

Talking with a bunch of owners at my LFS the conclusion was hit or miss. But keep them fed and you have a better chance. They are cool fish.

60 gallon tank can hold lots of fish, that like your tank dimensions. You can't just dump them in all at the same time. 1 per week would be ideal. Let the rocks build up the bacteria. Run a skimmer fuge and consider a UV light and you can keep a lot more fish then what has been quoted. The key is parameters. Add a fish. Wait a bit. Take readings. You will find your own "max"

Coral put out waste also but fish are several times more "dirty" A proper sump say 20-40 gallons would let you keep much more in terms of macros, house critical tank equipment and make the display look nice.

With large tanks flow is of concern. You do not want to make your return pump the main source of flow. With only a 12 gallon sump i would maybe push 400 gph. Too much flow defeats the purpose, and makes tons of micro bubbles.

Where's the pictures? Any cool corals yet? I might be fragging my chalice soon, so I'm keeping an eye out for trades. biggrin.gif
